Asha ji, one of the leading lady playback singers in Indian cinema, turns 83 today. Seventy of thes 83 years have been spent in an active career, probably the longest such accomplishment by a playback singer. As Sadanand ji indicates in his article (the one before this), he states that she is currently on a concert tour of US. This speaks of the energy and the verve of this personality.

“बहारों ने छेड़ा खुशी का तराना”
The antecedents of this song are somewhat peculiar. As per available information, this song is listed in the Geet Kosh for the film ‘Aansoo’, an unreleased film from 1970s. Also, as I checked for online availability, I find that this song is posted for the film ‘Majboori’, that is listed for the year 1986. I went back and double checked other songs which are listed in the Geet Kosh for the unreleased film ‘Aansoo’, and sure enough, the songs listed in Geet Kosh figure in the film ‘Majboori’. The most likely scenario is that the film was started sometimes in the 1970s, with the title ‘Aansoo’, and the songs were created and released under that film name. The film would have been delayed inordinately, and finally found its release almost a decade later in 1986, albeit under a different title – ‘Majboori’.

“फुर्र से उड़ जाती थी बुलबुल”
Although he lacked the finesse and comeliness of Shammi Kapoor, yet Jeetendra did acquire the epithet of ‘Jumping Jack’ of Hindi cinema. The film was ‘Farz’ from 1967. White shoes till then, were typically a trademark of either Rajkumar, or of the villain bosses like NK Ansari etc. In ‘Farz’, Jeetendra donned these white shoes for the song “Mast Bahaaron Ka Main Aashiq”. The image captured the imagination and clicked with the audiences. And then of course, followed a string of films with songs by Jeetendra presented with the same vigor and similar mannerisms. The ‘Jumping Jack’ epithet quite stuck on now.

Missing Films of 1960s – 26

There is a lot of discussion, heated debate, controversy etc. etc. on plagiarism. Given that the entire structure of the music world is founded on simply seven basic notes. Yes, we go on to sub notes and compound notes, and then ragas (combination of notes). But to the uninitiated, and untrained in classical music (like myself), it seems well nigh impossible that one can continue to keep on creating new songs and do not repeat a melody. Every day, hundreds, maybe thousands of new songs are born. It is really an amazing wonder that we do not find many more replications, than we already do.

Missing Films of 1960s – 25

Back again, with another un-represented film from 1960s. The film being introduced today is ‘Ek Tha Alibaba’ from 1963. Obscure and unknown, nothing much is known about this film. Here are the details available in the Geet Kosh.
This film is listed as a fantasy film, produced under the banner of Shankar Movies. It is directed by Harbans. The film is actually a Dara Singh – Nishi starrer. The cast of actors besides the lead pair mentioned, includes Tiwari, Heeralal, Helen, Maruti, Naazi and Ram Singh. But it is strange that a Dara Singh film from 1960s is obscure. Generally, his movies are almost all available, apparently except for this one. Thankfully, the music is.

“पढ़े लिखे कुछ खास नहीं पर नाम है मिस्टर वाई”
This song has been waiting in the wings, since the day I posted “Thandi Thandi Hawaa Mujhe Chhede Yahaan”, as part of the ‘Missing Films of 1960s’ series. At first I had shortlisted this Rafi Sb’s song for that post. But then on second thoughts, I changed it and saved this song for the Rafi Sb series. Good choice, I think. This song fits in well on the ‘प’ letter position.
