KAPOOR Khandaan is called the First family of Bollywood, not for nothing !

Starting with Prithwiraj Kapoor till Kareena and Ranbir, all through the generations, they have been shining in the film industry. This is not just because they belonged to the Kapoor khandaan. In film industry, particularly in the acting field, one can not survive for long, if one has no talent or if he is not doing hard work. One’ s ancestry alone is not acceptable to the Indian audience. This has been proved time and again. For example, Raaj kumar, Raj Babbar, Rajendra Kumar or Shashi Kapoor were successful actors, but what happened to their sons ?

I am told by my daughter (don’t know how she keeps track of all this in between her tight schedule of finishing her projects etc) that today (15 april 2013) is Hasrat Jaipuri’s birthday. I am sure every one knows a lot about Hasrat Saab’s history, where he was born (Jaipur), his birth name (Iqbal Hussain). How he fell in love with a Hindu girl in his youth – the song “Yeh Mera Prem Patra Padhkar” was written for her (so says Wikipedia) which was later used in “Sangam” by Raj Kapoor.

The movie had Mala sinha, Rajinder Kumar, Kumkum, Dharmendra, Dara Singh, Sujit Kumar, Agha, Roopesh Kumar, Ramesh Deo, Dev Kumar, Nazir Hussain,Tuntun, Kesto Mukherjee, Nana Palshikar, Raj Mehra,Shetty,Sushama Shrestha, Kamal Kapoor, Shyam Kumar, Ram Mohan, Radhe Shyam, Narbada Shankar, Brahm Bhardwaj, Hira Lal, Gopal, Manmohan, Ratan Gaurang etc in it.

“Do Dulhe” (1955), by now an obscure movie, was an United Art production movie. It was directed by K J Mahadevan. The movie had Sajjan, Shyama, Lalita Pawar, Vanjana, David Abraham, Agha, Achla Sachdev, Kanhaiyalal, B. M. Vyas, Ishwarlal etc in it.

Lata Mangeshkar has sung with G M Durrani only 11 songs, six of them are light-hearted, teasing or ‘sawaal-jawaab’ (question-answer) type. Here is one of such songs ‘ hello mister dil betaab ho kiske liye’ from the film ANAND BHAWAN (1953) sung by them. The star cast included Manhar Desai, Nigar Sultana, Trilok Kapoor, Durga Khote, Tiwari etc. The film had eight songs of which four each were written by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and Noor Lucknawi. The songs were composed by Vasant Desai. One song from the film has been covered in the blog. The song under discussion was written by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan.

I grew up with the music of late 1960s and early 1970s. That was the time when R D Burman burst into the scene like a tornado. When things settled, the musical scene was totally rearranged with old order finding themselves becoming irrelevant in no time.
