Hindi songs in Bangla Films – 33
————————————–

Music Directors, Ravi (Ravi Shankar Sharma) and Hemant Kumar (Hemant Mukherjee or Hemant Mukhopadhyay as he is known in Bangla films industry) had an interesting and collaborative partnership in the 1950s. As revealed in his multiple TV interviews, Ravi came to Mumbai in 1950 to become a playback singer. He started as a chorus singer and his first song as a chorus singer was for zara jhoom le jawaani ka zamaana in ‘Naujawaan’ (1951).

I would prefer to stop counting the numbers, and rather go by the impressions in the memory. Well, it sounds so unbelievable that Nitin Mukesh turns 70 today. It seems like just a little while ago that we heard him sing for the first time in ‘Mera Naam Joker’ (1970). It was actually an unlisted song, in English. A song of good wishes and greetings – “Wish Me Luck”.

Then in 1981, when the song “Zindagi Ki Na Toote Ladi” from the film ‘Kranti’ was doing the rounds of popularity, my first impression on hearing this voice was – how come, was this song recorded earlier? The voice sounds so close to the voice of Mukesh, his father. Well yes, the voice is distinct, if one is listening carefully. But it also has an unmistakable shade of Mukesh’s voice.

Mention ‘Masti Bhara Hai Samaa’ – and there comes to mind an unforgettable sweet melody that will pull at the heart strings, no matter how many times you listen to it. Somehow, the duets that Manna Dey has sung with Lata ji or Suman Kalyanpur, under the baton of Dattaram, are melodies out of this world. Listen to “Ye Din, Din Hain Khushi Ke” from ‘Jab Se Tumhen Dekha Hai’ (1963), or “Na Jaane Khaan Tum The” from ‘Zindagi Aur Khwaab’ (1961), or “Boley Ye Dil Ka Ishaara” from ‘Santaan’ (1959), or “Pyaar Bhari Ye Ghataayen” from ‘Qaidi No. 911’ (1959), or “Bheegi Hawaaon Mein Teri Adaaon Mein” from ‘Shriman Satyawaadi’ (1960), or even the lesser heard “Mil Gaye Duniya Mein Jeene Ke Sahaare” from ‘Dark Street’ (1961) and “Yeh Nasheeli Hawa, Chha Raha Hai Nasha” from ‘Neeli Aankhen’ (1962).

Remembering Dattaram Wadker on the anniversary of his passing away today – 08 June, 2007. He was 78 when he passed away.

Hullo Atuldom

These days we have people from all walks of life connecting with each other over video calls, chat groups coming together on various online platforms etc. Similarly there are people who are going ‘live’ on Facebook and YouTube. On these ‘live’ days they showcase their talents in singing and dancing etc. I have watched a few and must say, rather admit, that this period of Lock-down is helping everyone rediscover their passion in singing and other art forms. All the best to all of them

Some videos of these ‘live’ acts are doing the rounds on the social media called Whatsapp. My husband forwarded me one such video which had the South Indian stalwart SP Balasubramaniam singing one of his popular songs from the 1979 Telugu movie ‘Shankarabharanam’.

Today (7 may 2020) is the 159th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore (7 May 1861- 7 August 1941).

Everyone knows a lot about Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. He was not just a Nobel Prize winning poet, his acccomplishments, achievements and influence go much more farther than that. Curiously, his influence on our life is often subtle and goes unnoticed. But it is very much there.

He has influenced Indian movies, including Hindi movies as well. He was in fact the person writing the national anthem of India (and subsequently Bangladesh as well). The national anthem of India was already included in a Hindi movie called “Hamraahi”(1945) beore it could become national anthem. So, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore got credited as a lyricist and music director in this Hindi movie posthumously, but before India could achieve her independence.
