Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 45
——————————————————————————————

The date today 22 september 2019. It is a sunday.

Ten years ago, this date (22 september 2009) was a working day. I was in Nagpur, Maharashtra. Despite that day being a working day, I had covered as many as eight songs on that day. Posting six or more songs in a day used to be no big deal for me.

Mukesh and his Composers – 19
————————————
chaahe kahin bhi tum raho,
chaahenge tumko umr bhar
tumko na bhool paayenge

Remembering Mukesh on his 96th birth anniversary (22 July 1923 to 27 August 1976).

A life and career spent on entertaining music lovers all over the world, the very mention of his name brings to the mind several of his priceless renditions. A voice which remains active on air-waves to this day and beyond. More than being on the air-waves and various technological formats, it is the legacy and remembrance of the familiar voice that continues to dwell in the hearts of music lovers. A voice so familiar that it directly conveys to our hearts the feelings expressed in his songs.

Missing Films of 1960s – 85
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

The next in this series is a religious film from 1970. Yes, the times were when this genre of films had a serious following, and the producers in the industry would be creating films in this category. Today’s film, ‘Shri Krishna Leela’ is from the house of Wadia’s, under their banner of Basant Pictures. As we review the data about film production under this banner, we find that this has been one of the very active production houses over the decades. [Note: I am examining the data in the Geet Kosh from 1931 to 1980 only.]

Lullaby was a much loved genre of songs in HFM during its golden era. Majority of lullabies are naturally sung by female singers and picturised on females playing mother to their young ones. The blog has 107 lullabies sung by 18 female singers (and a few male singers as well). Lata Mangeshkar dominates this genre. She has lent her voice in as many as 43 lullabies. Asha Bhonsle is a distant second with 13 lullabies. No other singer is in double figures and that includes legendary female singers like Khursheed Bano, Amirbai Karnataki, Rajkumari, Suraiyya, Geeta Dutt, Suman Kalyanpur etc.

Here is another lullaby song from HFM. This song is from “Aandhi Aur Toofaan”(1964).

Today’s song is from film ‘Adhoori Kahani’ (1939).

This film is made by Ranjit Movietone of Sardar Chandulal Shah. A lot has already been written about him, Gauhar Mamajiwala and Ranjit Studios, so I am skipping that part. In the late 30s and early 40s, i.e. from about 1937 to 1947, Hindi film industry was making films emphasizing social reforms, society needs, peaceful coexistence of different religions and also raising a voice against the sinful customs prevalent then in Indians, all over the country. Some of the topics were, child marriages, marriages between the very young and the old, dowry demands, disowning parents, gambling, criminal activities etc.

The song found me, literally, and bowled me back into my childhood, into the radio listening days, and this seldom heard lullaby that simply takes you into a dreamland. One of those songs in which the words, the music and the rendition comes together a such a perfect blend that listening to it, the world disappears, and for a while it is just yourself with the song and the music.

I was actually planning another 1960s film for debut and was searching online for posted songs for a film that I had identified. Without any preamble or focused thought, I just stumbled into this song. Nothing else struck me, except the first five words, that resonated with a long dormant memory somewhere deep in time. And without a notice, this song was upon me.
