Here is a fantastic song from “Gharonda”. Neither the movie, nor the song were mainstream ones by the standards of 1977, but this song and this movie struck the right chords in the hearts of the audience.

The movie “Pavitra Paapi” is by and large forgotten. The fact that this movie had the lyrics and music by Prem Dhawan is also not known to many. But this forgotten movie has a song that is extremely well known.

I have mentioned earlier that S D Burman tended to sing one song per movie and that one song was usually played at the beginning on the movie while the credits would roll in on the screen.
In some cases, S D Burman song would be played at the end while “The End” screen was on the verge of appearing and the audience were in a hurry to leave the movie hall.

1970s saw the emergence of small budget family entertainers sans fights and violence. Amol Palekar and Vidhya Sinha were two of the leading “stars” of such movies. Two of their most memorable movies together were “Rajnigandha” and “Chhoti si baat”. These two movies can infact be treated as extensions of each other, that is how much these two movies had in common.

This song is one of those memorable and immortal songs that the trio of Madan Mohan, Lata and Raja Mehdi Ali Khan created in 1960s. Most such songs were favoured by class audience, and the masses kept away. But here was a classy song that influenced even the masses. This song featured in Binaca geetmala final of 1964 (at 15th position).

This song is one of the oldest in this blog, and one of the most cherished one. Noorjahan makes her debut in my blog with this song. Rafi figures in this song too. This was one of the earliest hit filmy song of Rafi.
Except this song and singers, most other things about this song have been largely forgotten. This movie was called Jugnu ( I only knew a Dharmendra- Hema Malini movie of this name in 1970s). The lyricist is someone called Tanvir Naqvi, a namesake of the current Pakistani new ball bowler. Music director was someone called Feroz Nizami.

I grew in that era when masses would run away a mile from classical songs or classical dances. There were few takers for such kind of art.
Those days, some bollywood makers on a shoe string budget would make movies different from mainstream movies. Such movies earned rave reviews and critical praise, but these movies were rejected by masses. Film festivals were often the only place one could watch such movies.

The dashing Joy Mukherji, a Shammi Kapoor clone ( I do not call him poor man’s Shammi Kapoor, that title is reserved for Vishwajeet) sings a piano song in his home production “Humsaaya”. The movie itself was a failure, but this song survived and was the saving grace for this disaster of a movie.

Dil ka haal sune dilwaala

Shri 420 was a musical blockbuster which was full of wonderful songs. Most songs were sung by Mukesh on Raj Kapoor, but there was one wonderful comedy song sung by Manna Dey for Raj Kapoor.
It is a cute comedy song. The melody of this song keeps you mesmerised as many times as you listen to it. I have listened to this song about a dozen time already, and my dil maange more.
