28/12/2020 – Death anniversary of Pandit Husnlal (Husnlal-Bhagatram)
I have admitted in a post earlier that when I started my journey in the blog, that I could not recognize the name Husnlal-Bhagatram. I knew some of their songs well from radio days, but their MD’s name was conspicuously absent from the consciousness. Only explanation to this I can think of is that most of those known songs were Suraiyya songs and heard on AIR urdu service “aapki farmaish” programme. The reception of AIR’s (Urdu service) in Mumbai was so bad in 80’s that hardly anything said could have registered, unless one sits near the radio and concentrates on what is being said. Even then mostly it was difficult to comprehend, I can recall from memory. So, the name ‘Husnlal-Bhagatram’ was not known to me.

Hindi songs in Malayalam films-2

Hullo Atuldom
I am not attempting a tribute to the great favorite of millions of Hindi film music lovers. I am sure there are many Atulites who are competent and will do a great job of it.
I am just presenting HFM lovers a song which is not from a Hindi movie. I landed on this song as I was going through the discography of the singer whose voice has mesmerized an entire generation and his fans exist across the length and breadth of this vast country and beyond the boundaries. His fan following is not bounded by language barriers as we know that he has sung in various Indian and foreign languages.

Hello everyone,
I’m back here after another long absence.
And as usual, it is a very special anniversary that brings me back to writing here.
To be honest, I’m very much out of touch with writing nowadays. Can’t even remember when I last wrote anything more than 280 characters. So this post is going to be a struggle – but I still want to go through with it, because it is about someone who is very dear to me.
And not just to me, but to millions of music lovers around the world.
I’m talking about Rafisaab, of course.

Bhaari bhaari meena kumari
ghar mein jaa ke maara maari
This was the sales pitch sh’air by some urchins in Mumbai local trains, selling small items like hairbands, hair clips, fancy earrings, finger rings and combs etc. I have had an highly educating experience of travelling in local trains on regular basis from 1988 to 1994, during peak hours, traversing the length and breadth of Mumbai on central, western and harbor lines. The sales pitch and the bol bachchan street seller’s ingenuity in using colourful simile’s, in the present song reminded me of the long forgotten ditty above. (bhaari means costly or rich in mumbaiyya)
