In Hindi movies, stories of old movies are often repackaged and presented as new movies. There have been occasions when the same story was made into two films by the same maker. For example, Mehboob Khan made “Aurat”(1940) with Sardar Akhtar, Surendra, Kanhaiyalal and Arun Kumar Ahuja etc in it. He repackaged the story of this movie and made the blockbuster “Mother India”(1957) with Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar etc in it. Both these movies turned out to be successful. If we look at movies of recent vintage then Rajshree Productions made “Nadiya Ke Paar”(1982) with Sachin, Sadhana Singh etc in a low budget and this movie did well in rural and semi rural areas of Hindi belt. One decade later, the same movie was repackaged and presented as a tale of city slickers instead of village folks and the result was a mega hit viz. “Ham Aapke Hain Kaun”(1993).

“Naqaab”(1955) was produced and directed by Lekhraj Bhakri for Tasveeristaan. The movie had Shammi Kapoor, Madhubala, Asha Mathur, Ajit, Heera Lal, Yashodhara Katju, Maruti etc. in it.

When I think of Hindi Film Industry, I always ask a question to myself. Why was it that so many successful and talented artistes died so unceremoniously and in tragic circumstances ? Why did those who achieved unsurpassed stardom have such unhappy and sad ends to their lives ?

This article is the 11200th song post in the blog.
If I liken songs in the blog to rain drops, then one must say that the blog is suffereing from less rain fall this year compared to last year. 🙂 From a regular downpour of six songs a day, we are these days reduced to a trickle of one or two songs a day and there have been even some dot days in the blog. The last century celebration in the blog happened ages ago, viz on 3 may 2015, exactly 50 days ago.

“Chaalbaaz” appears to be quite a popular title for Hindi movies. Movies with this title were released at an almost uniform interval of nearly one decade each, starting from 1958. We have had movies called Chaalbaaz released in 1958, 1969, 1980 and 1989.

There are certain special words which seem to be favourites of film makers. These are used frequently in the Titles of films that are made. Some of the words I counted are not surprising. The work Ek (or its variations) has the distinction of appearing most frequently in the title of Hindi movies. Some examples for such titles are Ek roz, Ek thi Ladki, Eklavya etc etc. A staggesring 209 number of Hindi movies contain the word “Ek” or its variations !. This is for the period from 1931 to 2012. The next most popular words are Mera/Meri-165 films, Dil- 121 , Pyaar- 108 , Do- 91 , Hum/Ham/Hamara/Hamari – 87, Prem – 68 , Ghar- 51 , Veer – 45 etc etc.

Others in the movie included Amar, Maya Das, Lalita Pawar, Zohra Sehgal, Tiwari, Shuzzu, Anwari Bai, Cooper, Hamida Bano, Habib Alkaf, Mehmooda, Afzal, Qamar, Mohan, Zubeda, Pagare, Baby Roshan etc in supporting roles.
