“Ek Raat” (1967) is a movie which was produced by a production house called East and West movies. Rajnath was the director. This B grade movie had Sheikh Mukhtar, Simi Garewal, Madan Puri, Samson, Shyama, Laxmi Chhaya, Ravi Kumar, David Abraham etc in it.

In Hindi movie, it is only the hero and the heroine who are supposed to have tender feeling and who are supposed to fall in love. Other characers are supposed to be people without feelings who have no place for romantic songs in their lives.

When I look at the lyrics of this song from “Shaahi Luteraa” (1965), I wonder if the lyricist Gulshan Baawra had ever thought of becoming an anatomist/ physician as an alternative career option. 🙂 One can find mention of so many body parts in this song, viz. “Chehra” (face), “Zulf” (tress of hair), “Aankh” (eye),”Pehloo” (side),”Palken” (eye brows),”dil” (heart), “Jigar” (liver) etc. 🙂 But in the lyricist’s scheme of things, “jigar” is more valuable than “dil”, which few medical practitioners would agree with.

What a find!! Bless this YouTube, and all the scattered music lovers all over the globe. Somewhere, someone is holding on to some fabulous music and then voila, it appears on the net. A song I have been searching for a long time. I am sure it happens with others also; it starts with the thought – there is something one is missing. At times it will pass through the mind, and then get folded under some other thoughts. When I log in online, there are so many other things to look for, that are the significant need for the current series of posts, that this one (and many other such things) do not readily jump to the front line. And then one day, I am searching for something else, when I bump into this one thing, completely out of the blue, and the only expression I can manage at the moment is “O My God”.

The general impression of a qawwaali is that is sung by a group of singers and musicians together. Either it is one group that is presenting, with one or two lead singers, a number of other singers providing the chorus, and some members of the group are playing the musical instruments. Or it is a presentation by two groups composed as described above, who may be competing with each other, in presenting ideas about a specific theme. This latter variation is called ‘baitbaazi’ .
