“Picnic” was a very popular word in India in 1960s and 1970s. People, who could afford it used to go to some far off places during weekend or holidays to relax. They would play some games there, have their meals their and then they would come back. This in short was what was a picnic.

During 1970s, Amitabh Bachchan had taken over the crown of the number one male actor of the decade. The one actor, who looked like a challenger was Vinod Khanna, but Vinod Khanna’s mind was not into his career. He became a devotee of Achaarya Rajneesh (that is how he was then known, before he began to call himself “Osho”). As a result, he ended up nowhere. He neither got the spiritual nirvaana from his spiritual guru nor could he devote himself whole heartedly to his movie career. If he could only devote himself whole heartedly to his movie career, he could have been number one, at least briefly, and who knows, may be for even longer durations.

What is the best stage of one’s life to enjoy Hindi movies ? At the age of 5-6 years, you are too young to realise what is going on, and at the age of 15-16, you have learnt to think logically, and you are then required to become mature and responsible. Neither state of affairs is desirable if you want to enjoy Hindi movies.

People these days lament about the degradation in the quality of Hindi movie music today. And as example of exemplary music, the cite the eras of 1950s to 1970s. But I tell you, when I was growing up in that era,then I felt exactly the same way- that 1970s had seen a degradation in the quality of songs vis a vis songs of late 1960s.

To me, “Amar, Akbar, Anthony”, a 1977 release, defined the Bollywood of late 70’s to mid-80’s. The ubiquitous lost-and-found formula, rocking songs, maar-peet, vendetta, incredibly hirsute villains…. you name it and it was there. It was a multi-starrer too, multi-starrer being a buzz-word in the era. A multi-starrer to beat all multi-starrers!

In Hindi movies, actors are often seen singing in front of a gathering while seated on a grand piano. This to my mind was rather unrealistic. For one, there may not have been too many households owning spacious houses with huge hall where such grand pianos were kept. Secondly, it is humanly not possible to play the piano and sing a song simultaneously.
