“Sharmilee” (1971) was one of those movies that I lived a lot. This movie and its songs came about at a time when Kishore Kumar and R D Burman had taken the Hindi movie music world by storm. I also happened to be at an impressionable age (8-12 year age group) which meant that I was highly impressed and influenced by the music of that time. Forget me, even the so called grown ups turned out to be just as impressionable as me, as far as liking Kishore Kumar-R D Burman brand of music was concerned.

Deep deewaali ke jhhoothhe

Though I have seen the movie “Jugnu” (1973), I do not much remember the songs of this movie. While looking for deewali songs, I found that this movie indeed has a deewali song, and that too a happy deewali song. I wonder how I do not remember this song despite watching this movie.

“Kabhi Kabhi” (1976) is a movie whose music was quite unlike the music prevalent in Hindi movies at that time. The music of this movie had a retro feel about it and music lovers liked that. The songs of this movie became popular and they in fact have outlived most songs of that era.

In 1970s, we had a genre of movies that were supposed to be fun movies, which were mainly directed by Bengali directors like Hrishikesh Mukherji, Basu Chatterji etc. These movies followed their own formula of comedy.
