It has been one of those big mysteries of Bollywood which I have not been able to fathom yet. Just why did Kala Patthar not become one of the biggest block-busters of all times! Heck, it is not even among the top 50 grossers of 1970’s (it was released in 1979)

“Free Love” (1974) was not a sleazy movie, despite its title. It was a C grade movie though and it had Kiran Kumar and Yogita Bali in lead roles. The movie sank without trace. Many of the songs I have posted on this blog so far have been songs of the 1970s. I will not be so presumptuous as to claim that these songs are any better than songs of another decade. Every decade has produced its memorable songs and many would consider the golden period of Hindi film music to have started already in the 1940s/50s.

My memories of Sharmilee (1971) are associated with my seeing this movie on my first-ever visit to Mumbai (then Bombay) in 1972. I have described some of my experiences of that visit on the post relating to the song “khilte hain gul yahaan”.
