Sometime in early 1980s, I had heard a non-film song, ‘mohe aayee na jag se laaj…..ke ghunghroo toot gaye’ which was rendered by Pankaj Udhas. At that time, I did not think much about this song but its hook line ‘ke ghunghroo toot gaye’ periodically reminded me of the song. After the death of Pankaj Udhas in 2024, his old non-film songs started ‘bumping up’ on the video sharing platforms during which I heard this song in full after many years and liked it, more so because of its lyrics. Since then, I was planning to cover this non-film song for the Blog. But I was not sure about the genesis of this song, particularly when I came to know that the song was written by Pakistani poet and lyricist, Qateel Shifai. So, I kept the song in hold until I got some clarity about it. After doing some reseach on the internet, I am now in a position to write the article on the song.

The cast included Mithun Chakraborty, Rati Agnihotri, Utpal Dutt, Subbiraj, Kumud Tripathi, Javed Khan, Madhumeeta, Manik Dutt, Manik Chaudhary, Ranjana Sachdev, Subrato Mahapatra, Khokha Mukherji, Roopdarshini, Sova Sen etc with guest appearances by Ashok Kumar, Jayshree T., Ashalata, Dinesh Hingoo, Shibani Bhattacharya and Neelam Mehra. “Bad Aur Badnaam” (1984) which was produced & written by K.D. Shorey and directed by Firoze Chinoye, had music by Laxmikant- Pyarelal for songs that were written by Anand Bakshi. Lata Mangeshkar, Shabbir Kumar, Suresh Wadkar, Anuradha Paudwal & Shailendra Singh were the playback singers used for the six songs.
The film’s cast was headed by Parveen Babi, Sanjeev Kumar, Anita Raaj and Shatrughan Sinha. Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, Kadar Khan, Jagdeep, Urmila Bhatt, Madhu Malini, Madhu Malhotra, Kamal Kapoor, Jagdish Raj (was not a cop in this film), Raj Mehra, Ram Mohan, Pinchoo Kapoor, Tom Alter and I. S. Johar played important supporting characters.

‘Khoon Aur Sazaa’ (1985) was produced by K K Talwar and was directed by Hari Prasad Reddy. The cast included Girsh Karnad, Dilip Dhawan, Swaroop Sampat, Amrish Puri, Jagdeep, Prema Narayan, Dalip Tahil, Seema Deo, Kalpana Iyer, Piloo Wadia, Jalal Agha etc. Producer, K K Talwar is the maternal uncle of Rajesh Khanna who started as an associate producer of Rajesh Khanna’s film, ‘Roti’ (1974). Thereafter, he had turned producer with ‘Aashiq Hoon Bahaaron Ka’ (1977), ‘Sharda’ (1981) and ‘Baazi’ (1984) before he produced the film under discussion. This is the only Hindi film of Hari Prasad Reddy as a director.

He introduced his son Suneil Anand in this movie along with a newcomer actress Natasha Sinha. The other cast of this movie included Rakhi Gulzar, Raj Babbar, Smita Patil, Vishwajeet, Rakesh Bedi, Gautam Sareen, Birbal, Sudhir, Zubeida (2), Bina, Ghanshyam, Pardesi, R.S. Chopda, Mahajan, Narinder Mehta, Rahul Sharma, Ashok Sharma, Davinder, Ravinder Arora, C.A. Bhapaiyya and others. Music for this movie was composed by R.D. Burman. “Jawani Zindabad” (1990) was a film that has been listed in the romantic/ drama genre. It was a remake of the 1988 Kannada film ‘ Avale Nanna Hendthi’.
The film had Aamir Khan & Farha Naaz playing the lead with Asrani, Kadar Khan, Javed Jaffrey, Rohini (from South Indian films), Utpal Dutt, Shobha Khote, Rajesh Puri, Upasana Singh, Sushma Seth, Satyen Kappu, Chandrasekhar, Mehmood Jr., Birbal, Shail Chaturvedi, Jagdish Raj, Viju Khote, and many known faces playing supporting characters. Anand Milind were tghe music directors for songs written by Sameer & Verma Malik. Sadhana Sargam, Amit Kumar, Suresh Wadkar, Kavitha Krishnamurthy, Anuradha Paudwal, Udit Narayan, & Mohd Aziz were the playback singers used for the six songs.
