“Laawaaris” (1981) was a movie of the time when Amitabh was at the zenith of his career when the only way for him was to go downhill. Those were the days when moviewatchers went to the movie to watch Amitabh Bachchan the superstar, not Amitabh Bachchan the actor. Amitabh Bachchan and his producers had started to rest on the laurels that he had won in the past years. It was expected that the same old tired storyline would continue to wrk in movie after movie. And so it proved too.

“Laawaaris” (1981) received a poor rating in the Hindi weekly magazine (Saaptaahik Hindustan) that I used to read those days. The movie reviewer (Ishwar Singh Bais) opined that the best scene in the movie was the scene where “The End” appeared on the screen.

“Chasme baddoor” (1981) was a small bugdet non mainstream movie. This kind of movie, sans fights and sans lost and found storylines had their own fan following. There were several movies like this in 1980s that did reasonably well.

In 1980s, “disco” songs became the rage in Bollywood. This “disco” epidemic was endemic in Bollywood movies for about 5-6 years. Most “disco” tunes were direct lifts of westen numbers.

Apart from mainstream movies, which meant “action” movies in 1970s, there were social/family movies as well in those days. One major maker of such movies was Rajshree productions. In addition, there were a few south Indian producers of such social/ family movies as well.
