So the song which I have chosen today is from a very recent (going by the unwritten standards of our blog) bollywood movie though the movie itself had its story based in Pre independence India. It showed how the common folk reacted to the Hindu Muslim tensions back then. Even feelings as tender as love was given a kick when it came to religious sentiments. (At least that is what all the movies that are placed in that period depict. Sometimes I feel that thank god we were not born back then. But then I do not think we are living any differently even now in the 2000s, are we?) But lets not get into all that and focus on the song itself.

I was introduced to English pop songs sometime in 1988-89 by none other than my son. He would play those pop songs recorded on a couple of audio tapes and I would be compelled to listen to them. Soon I started liking many of those pop songs. By 1991, T V channels like MTV had started telecasting the videos of some of those pop songs. Watching the pop songs with videos was a new experience for me. Even after two decades, I still recall a few of those pop songs which I used to like – Stevie Wonder’s ‘I just called to say I love you’, Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat it’, George Michael’s ‘ Last Christmas’, Eric Clapton’s ‘Tears in heaven’, Paul McCartney’s ‘Hope of deliverance’ etc.

In this blog I dream of the day when we will cover so many songs that our readers will struggle to give me the farmaish for undiscussed songs.:) Considering the number of songs that are not yet discussed in the blog, that day is far off. But there are very few cases where we have reached that stage already. For instance, we have covered all the available Hindi film/ non film songs of K L Saigal and there are no K L Saigal left to be covered. Similar is the case more or less for the songs of Sajjad Hussain too.

I have mentioned it in a previous post that there are two sites that are blatantly copying the contents of this blog for the last several days. I had avoided mentioning these sites by name, hoping that better sense would prevail and I had acted in the manner advised on internet. Under such situations, the advise is to find the hosts of these sites and inform the hosts. I had informed the hosts of these two sites. One host seemed to be responding somewhat but the other host would only respond by sending an automated response everytime I emailed that host.

So this month sees a few greats celebrating their birthdays, one of them being Shabana Azmi- daughter of the very talented Shaukat Azmi and the poet with Communist leanings Kaifi Azmi. Basically a talent that was more into art films (a very Bollywood way of naming cinema that were seen only at film festivals and at the National Award ceremonies) but some one who couldn’t completely ignore the pulls from the commercial cinema (as Shashi Kapoor once said one genre kept his home fires burning and providing funds for the other genre). So we could see her winning awards for Paar, Arth Nishant etc and entertaining us in Parvarish, Fakira, Swarag Narag, Jwalamukhi etc, in my honest opinion she looked great in glamorous outfits as well as in Sarees.

So now we are into the festival season in India. Post 15th August, the month of Sharavan in the Hindu calendar, we get one festival after the other. This year Raksha Bandhan is the first. In Maharashtra the Kolis celebrate it as Nariyal Poornima. They normally set out for fishing after this festival and offer Pooja to the Sea gods. There is normally no fishing during the rainy season along the coast of Maharashtra.

So I have been trying to get the words of this Gulzar number for the last one year. Hope I have got it right. Actually I began writing it for Gulzar’s birthday last year and then found that there are too many words coming out of Roop Kumar Rathod who had to keep up in pace with Nana Patekar’s style of speaking. So I let go of the song last time. And sent another song Itna lamba kash lo yaaron from the same movie. Then I had completely forgotten the whole thing.

This is a Sonu Nigam song from the 1997 film Pardes. It happens to be one of those songs which were in my original list of desert songs. This is a Subhash Ghai film starring Shah Rukh Khan, Apoorva Agnihotri, Mahima Chaudhary, Amrish Puri, Anupam Kher etc. This was Mahima Chaudhary’s first film. And as per his penchant for naming the heroines he would launch in his movies, Subhash Ghai has given her the name ‘Mahima’. Just like, Meenakshi (Hero) and Madhuri (Ram Lakhan) etc. Having seen the film on its release, this song is there in the memory as one with a car driving fast on the interstate in the middle of desert. On seeing it again Irealised that only a little part of the song is on the road, in a car. The rest of it is in Las Vegas and Disney land.
