In the aftermath of Kargil War of 1999, some Hindi films have been made on this subject, mostly as war films like ‘LOC Kargil’ (2001) and ‘Lakshya’ (2004). In the recent period, ‘Gunjan Saxena’ – The Kargil Girl’ (2020) and ‘Shershaah’ (2021) were also made on the subject. I was not aware that ‘Dhoop’ (2003) was also related to Kargil War of 1999. When I watched the film, I became aware that this film was based on a true story of Captain Anuj Nayyar, MVC who laid down his life while capturing Point 4875 in the Tiger Hill sector in Kargil War. He was posthumously awarded Maha Veer Chakra and his family was granted franchise for operating a petrol pump.

‘Mr Yogi’ (1989), directed by Ketan Mehta was one of a few Doordarshan Serials which I had watched its all the 13 episodes when it was telecast. The very first episode set the tone of the serial to be a light comedy and satirical one. It is a story about an NRI from USA, (played by the late Mohan Gokhale) who has come to India to choose a bride for himself. In his quest, he meets 12 girls of 12 different zodiac signs which results in some comical situations. There were a couple of medleys of popular Hindi film songs of 1960s and 70s in this TV serial. In the end, he rejects all the 12 girls but gets hooked to an unknown girl (Subhangi Gokhale, who became Mohan Gokhale’s real wife). The serial was based on a Gujarati novel, ‘Kimball Ravenswood’, written by an American Gujarati, Madhu Rye (real name: Madhusudan Vallabhdas Thaker).

Hullo Atuldom

Like they say in some sponsored programs, I shall also say:- today’s song has been selected with the help of my daughter who is known as Peevesie to the followers of the blog. (I always feel we should acknowledge all those who help us). She is the one who pointed out that the director of the film (Paheli 2005) from which today’s song is, was someone who tried his hand at films which didn’t have the regular run-of-the-mill stories.

There are a good number of feature films made on Mahatma Gandhi and his philosophy. I have watched a couple of Gandhi films – Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’ (1982) and ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’ (2006). There is film titled ‘Road to Sangam’ (2010) which I had not heard of until recently. The title of the film gave me an impression of a film on a road journey to the confluences of the holy rivers in India (for example, Panch Prayags in Uttarakhand). But it turned out to be a Hindi film connected with Mahatma Gandhi.

Hullo Atuldom

“meri awaaz hi pehchaan hai
gar yaad rahe”

So much truth in those words which were part of the lyrics that Gulzar wrote for a song in “Kinaara” (1977). There have been many similar sounding singers but this particular voice had a character of its own. I am speaking of our dear Lata Mangeshkar or Lata didi as she was fondly addressed.
