In Hindi film industry, more than the talent in the chosen field, one needs to be saleable in terms of box office success to become a successful artist. In addition, one needs to have a godfather in the Hindi film industry like a producer/director belonging to a big banner film production company. In the sphere of music direction, there were many talented maestros in the 50s and 60s who composed some memorable songs for the Hindi films. But they could not sustain themselves for long thus failing to make it to the big league of music directors of Hindi film industry. They did not have godfathers in the film industry. Some of them did not become saleable despite churning out beautiful songs.

I had heard this song “rang le aayenge roop le aayenge” many times during its days in 1970s. This song was quite a popular song of its time, but all this while I was not aware about the movie this song was from. It is only now that I have come to know that the song was from a movie called “Bhanwar” (1976). This by now obscure movie was an Evershine Pictures production. It was produced by Shyam Keswani and Nandu Mirani. Bhappi Sonie was the director. The story of this song was written by Gulshan Nanda who was a very popular Hindi language pulp fiction novelist of those days.

The film ‘Mohabbat Isko Kehte Hain’ from 1965 is simply a treasure house of wonderful songs. And so it is, given that the lyrics are coming from the pen of Majrooh Sb and the music is created by Khayyaam Sb, the genius of the understated melody who has remained always by the banks of the mainstream. Whatever may be the film, his creations are simply fantastic.

Wow, and what a wonderfully melodious gem this one turns out to be. And an absolutely fantastic Rafi – Asha duet. In fact this was actually the song that I had prepared for posting yesterday, in the run up to the 300th Rafi – Asha duet and 200th song by Qamar Jalaalabaadi. Almost at the last moment, I got this message from Atul ji, requesting me to post the ‘Baaje Waala, Patiaayaale Waala’ instead. And so I switched the songs. And as I had the lyrics all ready to go, I am posting this as one of the songs to welcome in the new year. The melody and the tempo of music is so uplifting, it is a befitting piece of music to play on a celebration like today.
