Today’s song is from a comparatively new film ‘Lagaan’ (2001). The song,written by Javed Akhtar and composed by AR Rahman, is sung by 5 singers, viz. Alka Yagnik, Shaan, Shankar Mahadevan, Sukhwinder Singh and Udit Narayan. Why do I feel some readers are smiling after reading my above sentence calling ‘Lagaan’ as a new film ? As compared to what my forte has been so far (old films from 1930s to 1970), ‘Lagaan’ IS a comparatively new film. . . at least for me !

I am an Atulite and I am proud of it. It is an honor to be associated with a blog that drips pure love of music. Like almost all Indians I love Hindi film music. But I cannot claim to be knowledgeable about it. I do know many songs but that is not a qualification. There are thousands of songs out there, many of which have fallen into oblivion. It is the die-hard music lovers that keep track of these songs and chase them with an assiduity that would make Sherlock Holmes feel jealous.
I am amazed when some of my friends are able to name the movie, singer, lyricist and music director as soon as the song is mentioned. Some Atulites could also tell you charming little stories behind the making of each song. Delving here, I have discovered gorgeous songs that not much known but are as precious as Koh-i-Noor.

18th September 2015 is the birthday of Kaifi and Shaukat Azmi’s daughter Shabana Azmi. She turns 66 on this day.
There are many children who are known as so-and-so’s child and there are many children who make a place for themselves in public eye and then the parents are called so-and-so’s parents. That means Shabana Azmi’s Pehchaan need not be as Kaifi and Shaukat Azmi’s daughter. She is a persona by herself. Being the poet’s daughter or the veteran stage actress’s daughter only explains her artistic leanings.

So 31st January sees the pretty Priety Zinta turn 40. She completes 15 years in Bollywood. I agree yeh toh bachchi hai as far as our blog is concerned. But kya Karen? She is everything that we all love. A movie star who owns a cricket team 😉

‘Mammo’ (1994), ‘Sardari Begum’ (1996) and ‘Zubeida’ (2OO1) were films of Muslim trilogy directed by Shyam Bengal. So the song which I have chosen today is from a very recent (going by the unwritten standards of our blog) bollywood movie though the movie itself had its story based in Pre independence India. It showed how the common folk reacted to the Hindu Muslim tensions back then. Even feelings as tender as love was given a kick when it came to religious sentiments. (At least that is what all the movies that are placed in that period depict. Sometimes I feel that thank god we were not born back then. But then I do not think we are living any differently even now in the 2000s, are we?) But lets not get into all that and focus on the song itself.

So today (25 september 2013) is the 53rd birthday of Master Satyajeet (DOB 25 september 1960) who played the role of a young Dev Anand in “Hare Rama Hare Krishna”. He grew up and did a few movies as main lead mainly in Rajshri Films— Paheli (1977), Gopal Krishna (1979) etc and then probably he realized that he was getting nowhere as far as leading roles were concerned.
