When Madan Mohan began his career as a music director with “Aankhen” (1950), he used several singers and lyricists in that movie. Interestingly, Lata was not among those several singers. He began using Lata from his subsequent movies. And he also made use of less number of singers and lyricists in these movies.

In the golden era of Hindi movies, the storyline of most movies were of the tried and tested nature. Few movie makers would try to be different, because it meant takling risks and such risks rarely paid dividends at the box office. Still, every movie maker (and the actors working in these movies) claimed that his/her forthcoming movie was “different”.

How do I decide upon the songs to be discussed on a particular day ? It depends on several factors. On special days, I may decide to discuss special songs. Those special days are festivals, birth/death anniversaries etc. On those days, I discuss songs on a particular theme, or songs on a particular artist.

Jab yaad kisi ki aati hai

When I looked at the lyrics of the song, I thought that it was the song sung by Rafi that begins with the words- “Jiyaa ho jiyaa ho jiyaa kuchh bol to”, but I was wrong, I was confusing the title song of “Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hai” (1961) with the title song of “Jab Yaad Kisi Ki Aati Hai”(1967). But then the two titles are so similar, and it is only now that I have been able to distinguish between the two titles.

It may be difficult to imagine today but actors like Ashok Kumar and Nirupa Roy used to act in lead roles five decades ago, before they began to play roles of parents. In fact, the two of them were paired opposite each other in lead roles in many movies of late 1950s.

The movie “Yaadein” (1964) was as off beat a movie as any movie could be. The movie was shot almost exclusively on one set and with only one actor. This movie was made by Sunil Dutt under his home banner called Ajanta Arts productions Sunil Dutt himself was the sole actor of this movie.
