Here is a song from film Sindbad the sailor-52.

The name of Sindbad will remind you the storybooks we have read in our childhood. Sindbad, Allauddin, Alibaba, Birbal-Akbar, Haatimtai, Gulebakavali, Vetal Pachhisi and many such books have entertained the growing children for many generations in the past. I do not know what today’s generation young children read. But then, do they read at all ? I guess these children see the stories on TV-not the ones I have mentioned here. Their Heroes are different.

As has been mentioned in the earlier posts of the day, today (19 july 2015) is the seventh birth anniversary of this blog. One single article was posted on the first day of the blog in 2008. The blog remained one song a day blog for the first forty days and then we began to post several articles every day. Today, seven year later, the blog has well over elevent thousand songs. If one takes an average, it turns out to be an average of 4.5 songs per day. Come to think of it, maintaining this daily strike rate for seven years is quite an achievement.

Today (13 july 2015) is the 76th birth anniversary of Prakash Mehra (13 july 1939- 17 may 2009). He was a producer and director of Hindi movies. People growing up in 1970s grew up on a diet of Amitabh Bachchan movies which were produced and directed either by Manmohan Desai or by Prakash Mehra. It was in fact Prakash Mehra who helped create the legend of Amitabh Bachchan with “Zanjeer”(1973) ata time when Amitabh Bachchan was written off and he was on the verge of biddling farewell to his acting career. He was match point down ( as they say in tennis) when “Zanjeer”(1973) happened and he never had to look back again from ever since.

Recently, I read ‘In the Company of a Poet – Gulzar in Conversation with Nasreen Munni Kabir’ (2012). The book gives a bird’s eye view on the life of Gulzar – from setting his foot in Bombay (Mumbai) in mid-1950 to his continuing association with Bollywood. It was not so as revealed from his conversations in the book. Gulzar came to Bombay not by his own choice but as a part of his father’s plan to divide the financial responsibility of his large family following his post-partition migration from Dina (in Pakistan) to Delhi.

Six films in all, from 1958 to 1960.  That is how long his career lasted.  As a solo music director I mean.  After this six films, the brothers opted to work as a duo, a combination that lasted his lifetime, creating phenomenal music for more than 250 films.

Remembering Kalyanji on the anniversary of his birth today (30 June).

The Wonderful Sounds of 1930s – 9

What an enchanting and rare piece of music this one is.  Coming from the 1935 film ‘Raaj Mukut’, this song is part of the history that is eight decades old now.  Of the fourteen songs that are listed for this film in the Geet Kosh, only this one is so far traceable and available.
