Today’s song is from a film of early cinema-Bharosa-1940. There was a film of the same name- Bharosa in 1963, but the stories were entirely different. That film was more popular for Mehmood-Shubha Khote’s side story. Today’s film Bharosa-40 was made by Minerva Movietone. It was quite a serious film with an unusual, daring story for its time. The history of making this film is very interesting.

‘Jalsaghar’ [(1958), Music Room] was Satyajit Ray’s third film (4th film in terms of the date of release). After the box office failure of his second film, ‘Aparajito’ (1957), Satyajit Ray decided to make a popular film which would cater to the taste of Bengali audience. ‘Jalsaghar’. the short story of Tarashankar Bandopadhyay was the basis for the film which had the popular subject of the declining fortunes of zamindars (landlords) who patronized arts and music. So, there would be scope for songs and dances which would attract the audience.

Music Directors, Ravi (Ravi Shankar Sharma) and Hemant Kumar (Hemant Mukherjee or Hemant Mukhopadhyay as he is known in Bangla films industry) had an interesting and collaborative partnership in the 1950s. As revealed in his multiple TV interviews, Ravi came to Mumbai in 1950 to become a playback singer. He started as a chorus singer and his first song as a chorus singer was for zara jhoom le jawaani ka zamaana in ‘Naujawaan’ (1951).

Today’s song is a very rare song from an obscure film-Parbat ki Rani-1948. The film was made by Leela Chitra Mandir, owned by the heroine of the film-Leela Pawar. The lyricist and director of this film was A.Karim and the Music Composer was Master Ibrahim. He gave music to only 2 films and his only one song is available. It is uploaded by Shri Girdharilal Vishwakarma ji, who kindly tells us about who are the singers too. HFGK does not mention any singers.

Today 29th June is the ‘Remembrance Day’ of lyricist Gauhar Kanpuri. He passed away in the year 2002. He was active during the decade of seventies and thereafter till his death in 2002.
