Kamsune/Unsune songs of Asha Bhosle – 102

I have always thought that this song was composed by Sapan Jagmohan, but I am happily surprised that that is not so. It was composed by a gentleman named only as Ghanshyam. I am not sure if this person is the same one who goes by his full name – Shyamji Ghanshyamji. I request knowledgeable readers to clear this mystery for me.

Shyamji Ghanshyamji, although it sounds as a composer jodi, it is one person’s name. As a composer he gave some excellent songs like “Apni Aankhon Mein Basa Kar”, “Meri Hasraton Ki Duniya”, “Kabhie Gham Se Dil Lagaya”, etc

Whereas, the composer of today’s song is known to have composed for only one movie – Kunwara Badan (1973).

Today’s song is a qawwali from a Bilingual film – Kalakar-1954.

This was a film made in 2 languages-Hindi and Marathi. The film was made by Datta Dharmadhikari, for his own banner Alhad Chitra, poona. (Alhad was his son’s name).

When talkie films started, it also prompted the Marathi producers to make films in Hindi and Marathi, in order to capture the bigger All India market and to make more money. The very first Marathi Talkie film ‘ Ayodhyecha Raja ‘-1932 was also made in Hindi as ‘ Ayodhya ka Raja ‘at the same time. So, in this game of Bilinguals Marathi films were ahead of Bengali films, whose first Bilingual came out much later.

Asha Bhosle is arguably that singer who has sung more number of playback songs than any other singer dead or alive. She must have surpassed singing 12K songs in various languages.

Currently, we are in the midst of an interesting series capturing details of her rare or rarely heard songs during the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

song number 101 in this series is “Aayega Aag Se Aag Bujhane” from “Aayega Aanewala” (1967). It is written by Naqsh Lyallpuri, and the music is composed by the duo of Sapan Jagmohan.

Today’s song is from a social film- actually a Love story- Jawani ki Reet-1939.

The year was 1939 and the British Government had declared war against Germany and Japan, as soon as the WW II began. All countries ruled by Britain were – willingly or unwillingly, drawn into the war efforts and its effects. The war began in the month of September and soon various restrictions came into operation – like rationing, blackouts, shortages etc. The film industry which was still under its development stage suffered. It also realised the importance of remaining united as one industry. However, all that came after 1 or 2 years. In 1939 there was not much effect seen on the film industry.
