Hullo to all Atulwaasis

Let us have a fun song from the 1981, Shomu Mukherjee produced & directed “Fiffty Fiffty” (and this is how fifty is spelt in the title card) which was certified on 15/10/1981 and released on 13/11/1981. It starred Rajesh Khanna and Tina Munim with Om Shivpuri (Bihari), Purnima (Mrs. Thakur), Amarnath (Thakur Vijendra Singh who is killed by Mr. Bihari before the titles), IndraniMukerjee (Mrs. Bihari who becomes dumb due to Mr. Bihari), Jairaj, Anita Guha, Nazir Hussain, Johny Whisky, CS Dubey, Jankidas, Jagdeep, Mushtaq Merchant, Kader Khan and Ranjeet. Dialogues were by Kader Khan. Anand Bakshi wrote the songs and Laxmikant-Pyarelal were the music directors.

Today, the 18th of July 2017, is the 5th remembrance day of one of India’s most enigmatic and exasperating film stars. You don’t need to rack your brains too much to guess who I am talking about. It should be pretty obvious – is there anyone more loved, and at the same time, more derided than Rajesh Khanna, ever in the industry? A time was when he was worshipped by hundreds of thousands, and then a time came when the weight of the crown of being the self-styled superstar, became an annoying, nay, a highly dislike-able phenomenon.

A voice, that is as soft and pleasing as cool breeze. And a singing that is most natural, with no efforts for any artificial embellishments to the rendition.  A voice that is not formally trained. And yet, this voice and the persona behind it, have become synonymous with being the first lady of Bangla cinema.

Remembering Kaanan Devi on her remembrance day. She passed away this day (17th July) in 1992.

‘Shehzaadi’ (1947) is a film about which not much information is available online except that it was produced under the banner of Shalimar Pictures owned by WZ Ahmed and the film belonged to the costume drama genre. I had searched extensively on the internet about the star cast and the director but drew a blank. Earlier, I had even a doubt whether the film was actually released.

Missing Films of 1960s – 33
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Unbelievable – that this song is still waiting to be posted.

This gem of a song, a forgotten favorite from the radio listening days. Such a lovely and soulful song, a wondrous melody that enhances the poignancy of the emotions contained within the words. And the words – what an ocean of feelings has been captured and bundled, just within the three phrases of the first line itself,

dil liya. . .     gham diya. . .     kya kiya. . .

Today’s song is a fun song from the film Khota Paisa (1958). It is sung by Rafi, Shamshad and chorus. The film was one of those in which Johnny Walker was the Hero opposite Shyama. Johnny Walker was on the peak of popularity during that period. The film was produced and directed by M.Sadiq, under his own banner Sadiq Productions, Bombay. Music was by Madan Mohan.

This song is the 100th duet of Rafi Sb and Geeta Dutt to be posted here on our blog.

As I was browsing the net earlier in the day, checking for articles and source material on Guru Dutt, I came across this she’er (couplet) which was written by the poet Kaifi Azmi in 1964, on hearing the news of Guru Dutt’s demise.

रहने को सदा दहर में आता नहीं कोई,
तुम जैसे गए ऐसे भी जाता नहीं कोई
माना की उजालों ने तुम्हें दाग़ दिये थे,
बे रात ढले शमा बुझाता नहीं कोई

rehne ko sadaa dehar mein aata nahin koi
tum jaise gaye aise bhi jaata nahin koi
maana ki ujaalon ne tumhen daagh diye the
be-raat dhale shama bujhaata nahin koi

It is true, no one comes in this world
To reside for ever
But the way you departed
No one even leaves that way
Granted that the brightness of flame
May have inflicted painful burns
But still, no one douses the lamp
Before the night comes to an end

Remembering Guru Dutt, the vital genius of Hindi cinema, on his anniversary today (9 july 2017). Had he been alive, he would have been 92 today.

Today (9 july 2017) is the birth anniversary of Sanjeev Kumar (9 july 1938-6 november 1985), one of the true legendary actors of Hindi cinema.

Today, he would have been 79 – but sadly, he didn’t even get to live to the age of 50. He was just 47 when a heart attack took him away from this world, and from millions of his fans. Just like Guru Dutt (also coincidentally born on the 9th of July and who died way too early), Sanjeev Kumar’s death left a void in Hindi cinema.
