In the 1940s, Hindi films based on mythological and historical stories were produced among other genres of the film. Minerva Movietone’s ‘Sikandar’ (1941) set the benchmark for this genre of movies. The subsequent movies of this genre like ‘Prithvi Vallabh’ (1943), ‘Draupadi’ (1944)‘, Humayun’(1945), ‘Veer Kunal’ (1945), ‘Samrat Chandragupta’ (1945), ‘Krishnarjun Yuddh’ (1945), Prithviraj Sanyukta’ (1946), ‘Maharana Pratap’ (1946) etc are supposed to have paled in comparison to ‘Sikandar’ (1941) in terms of grandeur, picturisation of outdoor scenes besides screen-play and dialogues.

In my previous posts I have mentioned about the summer vacatons during my childhood days when I would be watching movies in the company of my Uncles, brothers and cousins. We used to visit the Akola, the nearest city for many reasons (viz buying provisions etc), but watching movies was the main attraction for us – children- to go to Akola.

The moment the film PEHLI NAZAR (1945) is mentioned, the first name associated with the movie that comes to my mind is Mukesh. His song “dil jaltaa hai to jalne de” quickly acquired an iconic status. The song has some interesting anecdotes too which have been discussed elsewhere in the Blog. The other details of the film such as Mazhar Arts banner, theme of Muslim social background, the director, the cast, lyricist and the music director come to my mind later.

Music Director Shyam Sharma, a regular employee with HMV (later on, RPG) had in 1970 recorded an Album named “Swar Bahar” that had ten melodious devotional songs by Suman Kalyanpur. NURSE (1943), also known as CHHOTI MAA, was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. The star cast included Khursheed, Arun Ahuja, Prabha, Anil Kumar, Indira, Sheikh etc. From the title of the film, I thought that it was a heroine oriented film. But after reading the synopsis of the film given by Shri Arunkumar Deshmukh as comments in one of the songs of the film, it was clear that it was more of a family drama than the story on the life of a nurse. Today’s song is from a ( supposedly) crime thriller, ‘Detective'(1958).
The second half of the 1950s and the first half of the 1960s saw a host of crime, murder, mystery and ‘whodoneit’ type films. Hindi film industry is famous its “herd mentality” where trends get established after the success of films of certain genre. Once films of certain genre becomes a hit, most producers seek to make films on similar themes and stories.

UMMEED (1941) was produced by Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Manibhai Vyas. The cast included Ishwarlal, Prabha, Noor Jahan Sr., Dixit, Neela, Ibrahim, Brijmala, Bhagwandas, Kasam, Kesri etc. The film was a family drama with a light comedy touch. The film was reviewed in May 1941 issue of ‘Filmindia’ magazine and had given a verdict of a delightful entrainment. A gist of the story of the film based on this review is given below:

Question-Answer (Sawaal-Jawaab) songs and its variant, teasing (Ched-Chaad) songs have a special place in Hindi films. These songs are generally duets of male and female voices and are my favourites in the genre of light songs. These songs are sometimes also composed in qawaali style. One can enjoy these songs doubly when the video clips of such songs are available and directors like Guru Dutt, Vijay Anand etc were involved in the picturisation of these songs.
