This is a song from a Raj-Nargis film Bewafa-52 and it is sung by Talat Mahmood.
It is not very common that Talat sang for Raj Kapoor. Raj was convinced that only the voice of Mukesh suited him, so in all the films that he produced or directed, he used to try using Mukesh for his songs. However,as a true Professional, if he were to work for some other producer or under a different Director, he followed the policy of strict Non-interference. So, in such films, we see other singers giving playback to Raj Kapoor, depending on the choice of the producer or director. Talat sang a total of ten songs for Raj Kapoor in 4 films, as following-

This is a song from film Madhubala-1950.
Will you be not happy if you get the Cake and eat it too ? Same thing happened whenever Handsome Dev Anand and the most beautiful actress of Hindi films, Madhubala acted together in a film. The audience used to become ecstatic with joy watching their films. No one cared if the story was weak or the music was third grade. What was more important was to see Dev and Madhubala, with a contented heart !

This is a very famous Bhajan, originally written by Gujarat’s Adikavi Narsinh Mehta. This Bhajan has been sung by most of the famous singers including M S Subbulaxmi and Lata Mangeshkar-both Bharat Ratna s. There are various versions sung by many other singers. Here is a song from film Sindbad the sailor-52.
The name of Sindbad will remind you the storybooks we have read in our childhood. Sindbad, Allauddin, Alibaba, Birbal-Akbar, Haatimtai, Gulebakavali, Vetal Pachhisi and many such books have entertained the growing children for many generations in the past. I do not know what today’s generation young children read. But then, do they read at all ? I guess these children see the stories on TV-not the ones I have mentioned here. Their Heroes are different.

Today’s song is from a ‘C ‘ grade stunt film of Master Bhagwan-Jigar-1949.
The word Jigar can mean Liver, heart, courage, dear, friend, depending on the context. Master Bhagwan- the name creates an image of a slightly bulky, smiling and jovial person doing a typical Álbela style dance.

Today’s song is from film Khazanchi-58. It is a very interesting and foot tapping song by Asha Bhonsle-The Inimitable.
For senior readers of this Blog, the name Khazanchi may ring a bell and they may remember the iconic film Khazanchi of the 1941, made by Pancholis in Lahore. That film had changed the HFM for ever and freed it from the rut of Theatrical, classical, boring songs, which actually sounded the same despite being from different films !

This is a song from the film Aplam Chaplam-1961. Talat and Lata sing with chorus, under the baton of composer Chitragupta.
If I ever make lists of composers under different headings like, Melody, Tune,Orchestra, Interludes etc, the first 5 names under the heading “Melody “would be, Ravi, Hansraj Behl, Khemchand Prakash, Anil Biswas and Chitragupta ( not as per any Rankings). Barring Anil Biswas, all the rest four composers never got enough name and fame despite making very melodious music. Chitragupta, Khemchand Prakash and Hansraj Behl got considerably less number of leading production house films compared to what they delivered, in my opinion.

After finishing my last song series on Talat Duets, I started thinking about a New Series. While browsing through my saved Drafts in G Mail, I realised that there were at least 100 songs and their links, lying unused in the Draft Box. All these handpicked songs were the songs that had remained unused as they were not used in that series. Whenever I want to do a series of say 10 songs, I am prepared with at least 15-16 songs. Many times, during the series period itself, I discover some new song suitable for that series and such songs then make back door entry in the series, with some of the earlier planned songs left waiting in the wings. Such songs thus add up to the number of undiscussed songs lying unused.

Today we are going to discuss about a song and the concerned film, which turned out to a great disappointment, despite boasting of all the ingredients that were required to make it a hit film.
The film Garam Coat-55 was made in a time when Nehru’s socialism was having a great influence on the film industry. Many IPTA workers faced the dilemma of choosing between Stark Communistic approach and socialistic pattern advocated in India. The major difference was that Nehru’s socialism never detested private business or the big private industry, but certainly a concern was voiced for the ‘Have Nots’.
