This is the dialogue spoken by Meenakshi Sheshadri to Anil Kapoor, a lawyer, when he has refused to take her sister’s Beena’s case. Meenakshi’s sister is a doctor and a patient dies in her private clinic, after she has administered a medicine to the patient. The medicine contains poison, and the bottle is already in the custody of the courts/police. There is no way anyone can prove that the patient did not die because of the medicine in that bottle. So all the lawyers are refusing the case and Meenakshi and the brother in law Parikshit Sahani, also a doctor, are running from pillar to post to find a lawyer who can defend Beena in the court.

Today (28 september 2019) is the 90th birthday of Lata Mangeshkar (DoB 28 september 1929).
When one discusses songs sung by Lata, we mostly discuss all time classics, songs that have stood the test of time, songs that have become iconic etc. And there are hundreds of such songs.
Also, she was very particular about the kind of songs that she would sing. She would look down upon songs with lyrics that she found objectionable. Instead of facing her ire, music directors would often take the easy way out and get these songs sung by some other singer. And the major beneficiary was her own sister Asha Bhonsle. Most cabaret songs sung by shady female characters (often Helen, Bindu etc: ) in the movie went to Asha Bhonsle. On some occasions, some music directors who had the necessary connections with Lata ji (viz Laxmikant Pyarelal) managed to convince her to sing such songs. That is how we found her agreeing to sing a few cabaret songs for Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Today (28 september 2019) is the 90th birthday of Lata Mangeshkar (DoB 28 september 1929).
She started her playback career in 1940s and she went on to sing till early 2000s, viz for seven decades ! Mindboggling indeed.

“Khoon Ki Pukar” released in 1978 – censor certificate is dated 29-5-1978. It was directed by Ramesh Ahuja and produced by Tahir Husain’s T. V. Films Pvt. Ltd. It had a cast headed by Vinod Khanna and Shabana Azmi with Aruna Irani, Amjad Khan, Roopesh Kumar, Krishnakant and Pran as main supporting characters. The movie opens with the lines in “buland awaaz” (have always wondered whose voice it was)

My affair with Sadhna started very tiny. The film was ‘Ek Phool Do Mali’ (1969) and the song was “Sainyaan Le Gayi Jeeya Teri Pehli Nazar”. That image of a beautiful Kashmiri village belle, with that charming and becoming smile captured my mind and my heart. She was being blackmailed by Sanjay to sing a song for him, using her recorded voice in a tape recorder, which he threatened to make public. So in a manner of speaking, the song was of the ‘Dance Under Duress’ category. 🙂 She is somewhat letting it on that her song and dance is a make believe effort. But then Hindi films are Hindi films. And a tiny pre-teen mind is quite inexperienced in these matters; and quite easily enamored by that charming smile, and the gestures of endearment, howsoever artificial they may have been.

hullo to all in Atuldom
We have all heard “Gore gore, o baanke chhore, kabhi meri gali aaya karo, gori gori, o banke chhori, chaahe roz bulaaya karo”. Now that song from “Samadhi” was filmed on two actresses one of whom –Kuldeep Kaur- was dressed in male attire. That was in 1950. There have been numerous occasions where a lady does a stage song dressed as a man or vice versa. In such cases the man dressed as a lady sings in a female voice –as Amir Khan had done in a song in the 90s. And Kishore Kumar before him in “Dilli Ka Thug” (but that was a genre in itself) But always as a rule we seem to have females who are dressed as males sing in female voice as was the case in the song from “Naya Daur” “Reshmi salwar kurta jaali ka roop saha nahin jaaye nakhrewaali ka”; or the one from “Kismet” “Kajra Mohabbatwala akhiyon mein aisa dala”. We have had one instance (if my knowledge is right) where the male is dressed in both genders and sings in the voice of Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. I am talking of a Mehmood song (in league with the Kishore Kumar song in terms of artist’s caliber. ??). But today I discovered a song which has the actress dressed as both male and female singing in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice. Now this is a first encounter for me. I had seen this song ages ago, that is before my association with ASAD; which means that those days I used to listen and enjoy the songs without bothering about who sang who wrote or whose music! Etc. So, here is my heartfelt thank you to ASAD for making me aware of the songs I listen to ??

‘Dil Se’ (1998) was produced by Mani Ratnam along with Ram Gopal Varma and Shekhar Kapoor and was directed by Mani Ratnam. The film was a part of Mani Ratnam’s trilogy of human relationship in the backdrop of politics and terrorism. In this series, his earlier two films were ‘Roja’ (1992) and ‘Bombay’ (1995).
