Sachin Dev Burman started his musical career as a singer-composer, mainly of non-filmy songs in the 1930s in Calcutta (Kolkatta). After joining the Hindi film industry as a music director in 1946, he sang very few songs in Hindi films and that too only those composed by himself. So I was under the impression that he did not sing any songs in Hindi films under the baton of other music directors. I was wrong in my impression as I found a few days that he sang such songs way back in the beginning of his career. As early as 1941, he had rendered a song for a Hindi film under the music direction of Madhulal Damodar Master. This song happened to be his debut song for Hindi films.

While I was busy checking up the details of Saif ali Khan whose birthday falls today(16 august), I came across the information that today is the birthday of Manisha Koirala too. I as well as the regular contributors had missed out on her birthday. It turns out that she was born on 16 july 1970, exactly on the same day and year that Saif Ali Khan was born. Could they be identical twins separated at birth, Hindi movie istyle ? 🙂 Not likely, because such separation at birth happens only in non royal families (viz. Pran and Nirupa Roy, for instance:) ). Here both Saif Ali Khan and Manisha Koirala happened to be born in royal families, silver spoon and all. 🙂

“1942 A Love Story” (1993) was a movie which was produced by Vidu Vinod Chopra and directed by Vidu Vinod Chopra. The movie, despite its publicity, was no great shakes.
But the music of this movie was quite a revelation. This movie was released a few months after the death of R D Burman. When music lovers heard the music of this movie, they sat up and took notice. Some reviwers even went as far as to state that this was the music ever composed by R D Burman ! I am not one to indulge in such odious comparisons, but I was one of those music lovers who found the music of the movie quite divine. When I went on to watch the movie, I found the movie quite a let down. The movie was supposed to be a period movie on 1942 but all the characters dressed, looked and behaved like people of 1990s.
