Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

This movie Adhikaar (1971) may have been forgotten, but this movie had some very nice songs in it. I had already posted one song “Rekha O Rekha” from this movie. Here is another song, a qawwali from this movie, this time.

And what a qawwali ! R D Burman proves that he was not just a composer of foot tapping western tunes, he could create nice qawwalis as well. And this qawwali is just as foot tapping as any other R D Burman compositions. This must rank as one of the best qawwalis in Bollywood movies, that is for sure.

Public have their own rankings for songs, but what about the elite, those who create such songs ? How do they rank songs and which are the songs that they rate the best ? A couple of years ago, an Indian magazine ( Outlook ) had taken a poll of people associated with Bollywood music industry ( singers, music directors, lyricists ) to find out their favourite songs.

“Naseeb” was supposed to be a sequel of “Amar Akbar Anthony” with the same cast of brothers. But unfortunately Vinod Khanna was into following Acharya Rajneesh those days and so he had to be replaced by Shatrughan Sinha. Amitabh and Rishi Kapoor continued from the previous movie as did Pran from the previous movie as their father.

As if bringing together a big star cast of leading stars was not enough, the song “John Jaani Janardan” brings together a galaxy of other current and retired filmstars of Bollywood. In fact this song has been aped in the 2008 movie “Om Shanti Om” too, though not with the same effect.

This song, which was almost forgotten by the new generation, got a new lease of life in 1980s when this song was included in a scene in “Andhaa Kanoon” where Rajnikant outsmarts his police inspector sister Hema Malini, when the latter tries to record his confessions to crimes in a hidden tape recorder. Unknown to her, Rajnikant ensures that the song “april fool banaya” replaces his confession in the tape. The finer details of how Rajnikant did that, unnoticed to everyone are not known to us mortals. Ranjikant could move faster than light, and so the detailed technical geek work involved in this may have totally eluded our limited sensory organs.

Young kids growing up in India learn as much of their vocabulary from family members and friends as from Bollywood movies and songs. I learnt the meaning of “ladki pasand karna” for the first time when I heard my mother advising her brother (mama for me) to get married ( “Shaadi kar lo. Koi ladki pasand kar lo”).

As if on cue, this song ” maine ek ladki pasand kar li” started blaring on loudspeakers after a few days. And thanks to my newfound knowledge ( gained by overhearing my mother), I knew the meaning of the phrase “ladki pasand kar li”.

It is one of the most moving songs of all time. It was the first sad song that I became aware of as a very young child. I witnessed a real life situation in which two brothers had a fight. A few days later, the younger brother left the home forever, never to return. He had left a note informing his elder brother about his decision. The note also contained words of this song- “chal ud ja re panchi ke ab ye desh hua began..” Whenever I hear this song, I am reminded of that real life incident.

It is a joyous song that would cheer everyone up. How joyfully Rafi has sung this song ! We have seen some joyful Rafi songs in the past. This song is different from them all.

It is mind boggling to realise that there could be so many shades of joys, and that one could express one’s joy in so many different ways. The same lyricist has written songs of joy, but he does ot repeat his ideas from other songs of similar nature. It is amazing to realise that the same lyricst could come up with so many different songs for seemingly similar situations and make them look different.

I have been listening to this song right from my childhood. Not just me, every Indian, young or old, gets a goosebump every time he/ she listens to it.

On the occasion of 15th August, 2008, which is the 61st independence day of India, here is this immortal song sung by Rafi. Jai Hind.

Old songs were not always serious songs or classical songs. There used to be light hearted timepass songs as well, which were not expected to become evergreen songs even by their composers. Popular impression among fans is that Kishore Kumar sang happy songs, Mukesh sang sad songs etc. In reality, every leading singer sang songs of different moods.

Take Rafi for example. He has sung songs covering the entire gamut of human emotions- right from devotional songs to tapori songs. And he would do justice to every song, however insignificant the music director, or the movie, or the actors may be.

Today is the day Rafi left this world 28 years ago. And the Bollywood music world truly lost its voice. Every year, we pay our heartfelt tribute to Rafi in various ways on this day. One way of paying our tribute is by playing his immortal songs.

There are some songs that are bound to figure in everyone’s list on this occasion.

Not all of these great songs were created by big name music directors. There are some immortal Rafi songs created by lesser known Music directors as well. People may not have heard of these music directors, these songs may not have become too popular in countdown shows, the movies containing these songs may have sunk without a trace- but one fact remains. All these Rafi songs have become immortal nevertheless.
