MISSING GEMS FROM THE GOLDEN 50s…. Song No….7
————————————————————————————

Today’s song is a lovely Meerabai bhajan, from the film ‘Toofan Aur Diya’ (1956), sung by Lata Mangeshkar. This song was very popular in those days and even today you will sway with its melody. The tune will linger with you for quite some time, I assure.

MISSING GEMS FROM THE GOLDEN 50s…. Song No….6
————————————————–

Bimal Roy, Satyajit Ray, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, V.Shantaram etc are some of the directors who enriched Hindi film industry with their offerings. They not only contributed significantly to the industry, but they also helped spread the fame of Indian movie industry beyond its shores.

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 14
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

There are many recipes to make memorable songs.  In my experience, one of them is – a B/C grade stunt film (the more obscure and forgotten, the better), an unfamiliar name of the lyricist, the voice of Rafi Sb, and the music of one of the lesser known music directors.  And voila, you have a fabulous and memorable song.  The song itself may be obscure, unfamiliar and possibly unheard for a long time.  But once you hear it – it is all a ‘wow’.

MISSING GEMS FROM THE GOLDEN 50s…. Song No….5
————————————————————————————

Today’s song is from the 1955 film ‘Faraar’.

We have already discussed the happenings in Hindi film industry in 1955, in the previous episode.  Name of this film had not featured anywhere, simply because it was neither a famous film nor a very successful film.  Its music too was nothing to write home about.  Even in such a film, we find a gem or a song special for other reasons.  I selected this film song for few reasons.

MISSING GEMS FROM THE GOLDEN 50s…. Song No….4
—————————————————-
Today’s song is from film Albeli-1955.

The year 1955 gave us some really meaningful and entertaining films. Raj Kapoor’s ‘Shri 420’ tried to bring in limelight, as usual, the hypocrisy of the elite society. It was a great film with a message, good direction and everlasting music by Shanker-Jaikishen, the three specialities of an RK film. From this film onwards, “Raju” became the favourite name of Raj Kapoor’s Heroes.( Like ‘Shanker’ was Shammi Kapoor’s lucky name in early films. Similarly ‘Vijay’ was the favourite film name of Amitabh Bachhan in 20 films, of Jeetendra in 18 films and of Mithun Chakrawarty in 16 films.).

Missing Gems from the Golden 50s….song No. 3
—————————————————-
Today’s song is from a film of 1954-Pehli Jhalak.

The year 1954 was a mixed treat for the film industry. The trend of movies on Detective or crime themes began this year, starting with Aar paar and Taxi Driver. Filmistan was the most successful production house with two superhit films having popular music from composer Hemant kumar. Naagin and Jaagriti were the films. Bimal Roy made three films- Naukari,Biraj bahu and Baap Beti ( based on Guy De Maupassant’s Simon’s Papa). H S Rawail made Mastana based on Chaplin’s The Kid.

Missing gems from 1950s-Song 2
———————————–

Today’s song is a Gem from the film Jhaanjhar-1953.

This was the first film produced by New Sai productions, a company floated by Chitalkar, Omprakash and his only brother Bakshi Ramprakash Chhibber (who took up the name ‘Pachhi’ later on and produced many films like Kanhaiya, Jaali Note, Naughty Boy, Mere Mehboob, Cha ch cha, Teesri Kasam, Around the world etc etc.). many people are under the misunderstanding that even Lata mangeshkar was a partner in this venture, But C.Ramchandra, in his autobiography mentions only these three names as partners. However, at the same time, C Ramchandra and Lata were partners in another company along with a man called P R Bhide, who cheated them later and also dragged both to courts. Lata and C Ramchandra came out of this without any harm, though.

Missing gems from 1950s-Song 1
———————————–

In the month of January, I had visited Hyderabad-my home town after a gap of about 6 years and I was quite excited about meeting close relatives and school/college friends. I had been in touch with them from Mumbai. They contacted me when I reached Hyderabad and settled down. We decided to meet for Lunch at an appointed day at one of our favourite clubs-Fateh Maidan Club. It was going to be a reunion for 6 friends, including me. Everyone was excited about this meeting. On the appointed day I reached the club at about 12.30 pm. All my fiends-5 of them- were waiting for me. After embracing each other, they all sprang a surprise on me and there appeared my 6th friend, who was not in the pre decided list. He too was from our group, but had settled down in US. He had come to Hyderabad just the previous day and he was invited to meet me . We met after about 20 years and were extremely happy to revive nostalgic memories.

Entertaining Sales Pitch Songs – 5
—————————————————–

It should be an interesting exercise – to identify and list out all the sales pitch songs, and then check which actors have performed them on screen. My intuition is that the exercise will indicate that most sales pitch songs, sung by male voices, have been performed on screen by either Johnny Walker or Mehmood.

Entertaining Sales Pitch Songs – 3
—————————————————–

Aha,

lailaa ki ungliyaan hain
majnoo ki pasliyaan hain
do do paise mein le lo babu
naram taazi kakdiyaan hain

I remember this jingle from childhood.  Occasionally used to hear it from the roadside hawkers, and once I even heard it in a radio play on Vividh Bharti.  Then many years later, I encountered this song also.  I used to wonder, whether the song came first or this jingle came first – which is based on which.  As I prepare this post, just casually I googled it, and found references to Lucknow and Agra where fresh vegetable vendors are known to use this jingle.  So maybe this is more of a folk tradition, converted into a film song later on.  Just like “Jumkha Gira Re Bareilly Ke Bazaar Mein“.  😉
