Today’s song is from an obscure film Doli-1947.

It is on record that the year 1947 produced a record number of Hindi films -181, till that year. This record was beaten only by number of Hindi films made in 1985 -187 films ! It means that the 1947 record remained unbeaten for 54 years, from the advent of talkie films in 1931. The historians, however agree that though the total number of Hindi films was 181 in 1947, films with good story, acting, direction or good music were not too many.

Today’s song is an ‘Unique and a Special’ duet from the film Parakh-1944.

Why and how this song is ‘Unique and Special’ will come later, but first let me point out another important matter. In recent times, in India, the women are better treated, respected and also honoured for their contribution to running the household as well as earning equally to manage the married life on level fields. Women can be seen practically in every field of activity and have reached the top of the work places in almost every sphere. We have seen them as President, Prime Minister of the country, In Judiciary, Banks and even in Armed forces-be it Army, Navy or Air Force, the police, sports etc. There is hardly any field where women have not put their stamp.

Today’s song is from the film Das Baje-1942.

The year 1942 was an eventful year for the Hindi cinema industry. The age old studio system had started crumbling and clever and ambitious directors started leaving studios to establish their own set up. Among these, the prominent were a group of disgruntled and dissatisfied artiates from Bombay Talkies, consisting of S. Mukherjee, Rai8bahadur Chunilal, Ashok Kumar, Sawak Wachha etc, who left and established a new entity named Filmistan. Then there were Mehboob Khan, A.R.kardar, V.Shantaram with their loyalists, Homi Wadia who left their parent studios and made new beginnings with their own studios. New Theatre, Calcutta lost Debki bose, P.C.barua, K.L.Saigal, K.N.Singh, Kidar Sharma etc.

Today’s song is a female-female duet from the film Swami-1941.

1941 was the beginning of a new decade. After the Talkie film’s entry, this was the second decade. There were many changes taking place continuously in the film making and so it was interesting to know how the year 1941 fared. The 30s and the 40s mostly differed in film music and story contents. The new blood composers like Anil Biswas, C Ramchandra, Naushad, Ghulam Haider, K Datta, Hansraj Behl, Bulo C Rani, Gyan Dutt and many more replaced the Parsi, Marathi and Gujarati drama music to more acceptable lilting songs. Many musical films were made and some everlasting songs were composed by these people.

Today’s song is from the film Rasilee-1946.

In India, the Talkie film was born in 1931.
