Today’s song is from the film Mulaqat-1947.

The film was made by Taj mahal pictures. It’s all 11 songs were written by Munshi Dil Lucknowi and the film was directed by the Lyricist himself. Actually, ” Munshi ” means a Clerk, a writer, a literary assistant or a Language Teacher. How this Munshi directed the movie is a wonder. But then in the Hindi film industry, you find many such odd, unimaginable things. This was not his first directorial venture. He had already tried his hand at film-“Abla ki Shakti’-1940 and after this film, he again directed a film “Do Bhai”-1954. As a Lyricst, he write 126 songs in 16 film which included films like Iqrar-42,Naqgad narayan-43 ( a remake of Marathi film ” पैसा बोलतो आहे”), Sohni Mahiwal-46 and Laila-54. After this he migrated to Pakistan.

I often wonder if is it possible to go through and listen to all the songs that have already been posted on the blog? And, can I recall each of them when somebody asks me or refer to a film’s name and pose a question about its music director, lyricists or other artists or the star-cast of the movie?

Today’s song is a special song. It is special because it is sung by an almost unimaginable actor who was a famous villain and we could never imagine that he would have sung a solo song and a record was brought out for that song ! But then life is like that only. It has routinely presented surprises, shocks, puzzles and inconceivable situations. That’s why LIFE is interesting ! Speaking about show business, it is all the more pertinent. There are umpteen number of cases where men became actors when it was not planned and from actors they went into something totally different, unconnected activity. Let us see some examples.

A singing Hero is not a novelty for those who are old film lovers, because in the initial era of Talkie films, most actors sang their own songs in the films. Though the Playback singing was introduced in 1935 in Calcutta and in 1937 in Bombay, it took a few more years to become fully prevalent in all films.

Today’s song is from an obscure film called Aisa Kyun-1947.

The film was made by Shri Raj Pictures, Calcutta. It was directed by A K Chatterjee and the music was by Anupam Ghatak. The cast of the film was Iftikhar, Radharani, Urmila, Pinky, Faiz, Tandon etc. Most people are not aware of the fact that besides New Theatres studio in Calcutta, there were many other film making studios in Calcutta. Today’s song is from the film Door Chalen-1946.

Since the time Talkie films arrived in India in the form of Aalam Ara-1931, the enthusiastic film industry, with a pushover from the silent era to the Talkie era, was busy in discovering itself. It was improving in every field as the years passed by. In the first 5-6 years the industry was desperately trying to be free from the clutches of stage music, drama style acting and contents of the films made.

Today’s song is from the film Devadasi-1945.

The custom of Devdasi has been in India since the 6th Century. Devdasi means- a female artiste dedicated to the worship and service of God in Temples or a Deity for life. She is said to be married to God. (sounds similar to Nuns in Christian Churches, who are also supposed to be married to God). These Devdasis learned the art of dance and music. Initially their status in the society was very high during the period from the 6th century to 13th century. Devdasis used to be quite rich too, due to large donations and gifts from the kings and the Royalties. However, later on Devdasis were used for personal purposes by the Nobles and the kings and their status became worse than prostitutes. They became poor and dependent on their patrons. They bore children too. Their daughters became traditionally Devdasis again.

Today’s song is a Fun-Duet from the film Aage Kadam-1943.

This is a duet sung by Leela Pawar and Master Amritlal. There were many actresses who carried the name Leela. Some were famous, some were not.Leela Desai and Miss Leela (Chandragiri) formed a part of ” Same Name Confusion” pair, as both acted and sang in A grade films. Some others were, Leela Mishra (the eternal Leela Mausi), Leela Sawant, Leela Kumari and Leela Pawar. Later on came Leela Naiduand Leela Mehta also. Those who used their surnames faced no identity problem. As such Leela Sawant and Leela Pawar were actresses of B and C grade action films. Leela Mishra did roles of elderly persons and mothers from the very beginning.

Today’s song is from the ‘1949’ movie ‘Saawan Bhaadon’.

I think I had never gone through the songs of this movie earlier. Our regular reader on the blog Shri Deepak Patwardhan ji has send me ‘farmaaish’ of this song (he had even offered to note down the lyrics of this song too, however I told him that I will take care of that  ). And this is the reason that I got a chance to present a song from this movie on the blog today.
