Today’s song is from the film Chehra-1946. The film was so obscure that it had no face to recognise in the crowd of 153 Hindi films that were produced in 1946. The film was made by an unknown banner – ” Upright pictures, Bombay”. The director was Rajendra Sharma, for whom this was his First film as a Director. He went on to direct 4 more films namely, Jal Tarang-49, Ehsan-54, Dost-54 and Indra Leela-56, before disappearing from the arena of films. The Music Director was M.A.Mukhtar.

28/12/2020 – Death anniversary of Pandit Husnlal (Husnlal-Bhagatram)

I have admitted in a post earlier that when I started my journey in the blog, that I could not recognize the name Husnlal-Bhagatram. I knew some of their songs well from radio days, but their MD’s name was conspicuously absent from the consciousness. Only explanation to this I can think of is that most of those known songs were Suraiyya songs and heard on AIR urdu service “aapki farmaish” programme. The reception of AIR’s (Urdu service) in Mumbai was so bad in 80’s that hardly anything said could have registered, unless one sits near the radio and concentrates on what is being said. Even then mostly it was difficult to comprehend, I can recall from memory. So, the name ‘Husnlal-Bhagatram’ was not known to me.

Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu, popularly known as CKP is one of the numerically smallest Marathi speaking communities of Maharashtra. But he cummnity has produced many intellectuals, playwrights, writers and bureaucrats. They are also regarded as an elite and a broad-minded community. But when one of their girls, Saroj Shilotri (Shobhna Samarth after marriage) tried to venture into films, her maternal uncle (who became the guardian after the death of her father) vehemently opposed her entry into films. The reason was, ‘who will marry her’? Those days, even broad-minded communities regarded working in the films as an act of moral turpitude.

Today’s song is from the film Kurukshetra-45. This was a film made by Unity Productions, Calcutta. The film was directed by Rameshwar Sharma. This is an unknown name. I could only find that he had directed only 3 films…Bhakta Kabir-1942, Kurukshetra-45 and Vaasana-52. All these films were made by Unity productions, so maybe he was from Calcutta. The Lyricist was Jameel Mazhari – another new name. He seems to have written songs for only this film. The Music Director was Pandit Ganapat Rao.

Today (23 november 2020) is the 90th birth anniversary of Geeta Dutt (23 November 1930- 20 July 1972). I was aware of this fact yesterday itself, seeing that I had received several contributions for the occasion. Moreover, this date, which happens to be a monday, is also a day when I present my weekly series of Lata Mangeshkar songs sung in a particular calender year- a very research heavy project. So, my hands were full on sunday (22 november) preparing for all these articles to be published on 23 november 2020.

kuchh aur zamaana kehta hai kuchh aur hai zidd mere dil ki
main baat zamaane ki maanoon ya baat sunoon apne dil ki

This was the swan song from ‘Chhoti Chhoti Baaten’ (1965) both for the singer and the music director of the song as this was their last film in Mumbai before shifting lock stock and barrel to Delhi in 1963. The playback singer was Meena Kapoor and the music director was Anil Biswas. In relation to her romantic affairs with Anil Biswas in the early 1950s, just like in the above two-liner, she was in a quandary. But her heart was adamant (aur hai zidd mere dil ki) that led to a long partnership with Anil Biswas irrespective of what the society said about their relationship.

Today’s song is from an obscure film Ranee-43, which was a Bi-lingual film made by Calcutta’s Barua Productions.

The film was directed by P C Barua and the music was by Kamal Dasgupta. Barring a few big movies, the Hindi-Bangla bilingual films did not become as successful as their Bangla versions. I feel the reasons were mainly two. One was that the cast of such films consisted of most names, with which the Hindi audience was not familiar. The second point was the style of acting and the dialogue delivery of the Bangla actors was deemed strange in Hindi belt. The Hindi used in films made in Bengal was too pure to be of the liking of people who were used to Hindustani language. The audience preferred ” pyar or muhabbat ” to ” prem “, for example.
