‘इ’ – इस जग में कहीं भी रहियो

Aah, only if it were possible in this physical world. The only recourse is to listen to the recordings. That charisma is going to remain alive, till the time there is music on this earth. The magic of Rafi Sb’s voice will never cease.

Now, none of the regulars can say they have not heard this song. In a film that boasts of more than one song that competes for the title of the best song in the film, this song surely is one of the best songs in this film. Wow – that sure is saying something for the quality of songs of this film. In 1962, music director Ravi has been active as an independent music director for about seven years now, and he already has about 30 films behind him, that he has composed for. His films include such notable hits as ‘Ek Saal’ (1957), ‘Dilli Ka Thug’ (1958), ‘Ghar Sansaar’ (1958), ‘Chaudhvin Ka Chaand’ (1960), ‘Ghunghat’ (1960), ‘Gharaana’ (1961), ‘Modern Girl’ (1961), ‘Bombay Ka Chor’ (1962) and many more. And then in 1962, out comes this Shammi Kapoor, Shakila, Helen starrer called ‘China Town’ – and the popular response is “Baar Baar Dekho, Hazaar Baar Dekho”. Oh yes, the songs of this film – one just does not feel done with them, no matter how many times you have heard them.

It was a great day yesterday. 🙂 The sun completed its journey cycle of the southern hemisphere, and slowly started to edge over the tilt of the earth’s axis and initiated its journey of the northern hemisphere. The Uttaraayan is initiated. The sun has moved from the ‘dhanu’ constellation to the ‘makar’ constellation, as per the Indian solar calendar. The cycle of seasons moves from Hemant to Shishir. It is the start of the abatement of the cold weather (in the northern hemisphere).

IS Johar had a lead of three years over Raj Kapoor. His film ‘Mera Naam Johar’, released in 1967, preceded the great showman’s masterpiece ‘Mera Naam Joker’ which came in 1970. It is a matter of conjecture now, as to who inspired whom. 🙂

Missing Films of 1960s – 41

1960s is turning out to be a very interesting era. Notwithstanding the known popular songs, it is the unfamiliar and the forgotten songs that are turning out to be absolutely fantastic entertainment.
Take today’s debut film – ‘Dilruba’ from 1967. Ah yes, I know there might be some eyebrows raised in surprise – but well, ‘Dilruba’ is an earlier film, and aren’t we familiar with it. And that its songs are very much present on our blog. And goodness yes, the film has been yippeee’d already. Well I guess you are right on all counts, except that the film ‘Dilruba’ that has been yippeee’d already is a film from 1950. The film that I am bringing on board today is a same name film, but it is from 1967. Yes, this same name confusion sometimes makes miss some new items.

OK, so we come to the Yippeee song for today. The film is ‘Naag Mandir’. Just day before yesterday we have posted a song from this film. And you know, an interesting thing happened. This film has six songs listed in the Geet Kosh. Before yesterday’s post, three songs were on the blog. And then, with yesterday’s post, this film got a double promotion. What with that song being a multi version song, actually two songs on the list – actually same song sung by two different singers – the count got incremented not by 1 but by 2. That is convention we follow on this blog. In case the same song appears more than once in a film, as a multi part song or as a song separately sung by more than one singers, then we include all such multi parts / multi versions in the same post.

In Hindi movies, a typical “expression of love” genre of song finds the gentleman praising the lady in poetic terms, viz comparing her eyes with lake, her talk with clinging of bells (or koyal ki kook) etc. But when the gentleman in question is someone like Johny Walker then one may well find the lady being likened with items that are more mundane and more common place. Here is a Johny Walker song where lady’s eyes are compared with “omlette” and her talk with “chocolate”. The lady herself is compared to a mango fruit that has freshly fallen from its branch. 🙂
