Missing Films of 1960s – 109
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Today’s film is ‘Night In Calcutta’ from 1970, produced under the banner of Mahendra Productions, Bombay. Given that it is a 1970 film, and looking at the list of songs, I am surprised this film did not make it here earlier. The lead pair in this film is Sanjeev Kumar and Simmi. By the time this film was released in 1970, both actors had comfortably settled into their careers. Sanjeev, having made his debut in 1960, had 10 years behind him, mostly in B/C grade cinema. 1971 was a year ahead when he would get recognition and national award with his portrayal in the film ‘Dastak’. Simi Garewal, had made her debut in 1962, with the English film ‘Tarzan Goes To India’ opposite to Feroze Khan, also had a good eight years behind her, with a mix of films, but mostly second female lead or a character role, but surely having worked with luminary directors of Indian cinema – Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Mehboob Khan, Raj Kapoor and Raj Khosla. ‘Siddhartha’, directed by Conrad Rooks – a definitive role as a courtesan, was still two years hence, in 1972.

Mohammed Rafi : The Incomparable (II) – Song No. 09
———————————————————
Another momentous occasion, another celebratory post and I was feeling lost. Where was the inspiration ? I saw the e-mailer for the celebration posts planned, just after I had prepared and submitted a post for another song(yet to be posted). This post took a whole three weeks to complete. I am actually not happy writing posts this way. I prefer to write the complete post, in one go. I may look at it 2-4 times and make certain corrections/improvements if required before submitting the post. If I am forced to take breaks while writing the posts, than it takes forever to complete the job.

Fresh instructions were issued to write a post and send it ASAP 🙂 . Incidentally, this acronym is three quarters same as ASAD. ASAD means “Lion” in Arabic and Urdu. I tried to find if this word has a meaning in any other language and found on Google that it means “shubha Mahurat” in Hindi. How appropriate is all this !

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 28

Looking at 13th April of ten years ago, the post score card was six songs.

Ghar Aaya Mera Pardesi Aawaara 1951
Teri Duniya Me Jeene Se To Behtar Hai Ke Mar Jaayen House No 44 1955
Tu Kahan Ye Bataa Is Nasheeli Raat Mein Tere Ghar Ke Saamne 1963
Iktara Bole Yaadgaar 1970
O Neele Parbaton Ki Dhaara Aadmi Aur Insaan 1969
Prem Kahaani Me Ik Ladka Hota Hai Prem Kahaani 1975

Two of the six films represented that day had made their debut – ‘House No. 44’ (1955) and ‘Yaadgaar’ (1970). Of the six films, five are already yippeee’d over the past 10 years. The one film that still awaits all its songs to be posted is ‘Yaadgaar’. Today, we bring to fore the fourth third song of this film, from a total of six songs listed.

It is such a delight to ferret out unheard songs from obscure and unfamiliar films. So many times, I come across the film names and then move on because it is unfamiliar. So many times I pause at a film folder in my collection, thinking whether I have opened it before. But then usually, other pressing matters take precedence and I say ‘oh well’, and move on.

Little earlier in the day, Atul ji mentioned about the timing of posting of Holi songs, and I quote,

Different festivals remain topical for different duration of time. If we do not post a write up within this time then the post loses its relevance. In case of Holi, it is the first half of the day mostly when people are mostly in festive mood, though it spills over to the afternoon as well.

As I am rushing to complete this post, it is already around 6 pm. Yes, the festivities for the day have been over for some time. Mostly the people have cleaned up and many would have had their afternoon siestas too. Maybe the only remaining sign of the festivities from earlier part of the day are the splashes of colored water on walls and floors, which most people would address tomorrow morning. Ah yes, another lingering evidence of the celebration could be some people still in the hangover of the bhaang, maybe still sleeping it off, or if awake, not yet back from the cuckoo land. 🙂

This post is coming somewhat late in the day, but the attempt is cover an important aspect of the celebrations of today. The festival of Holi, for ages now, has been intimately associated with the story of Lord Krishna. And so, the celebration somehow does not seem to be complete without having one song about Holi in Biraj, or Brij, the native place where the child Krishna grew up. There abound many a legends and folk songs that tell of the Holi celebrations when Krishna was in Brij. And the same has also been carried over into the Hindi films. Many a songs of Holi in Hindi films revolve around the stories and pastimes of Krishna.

Goodness, what a lovely duet this one is. The film is ‘Sampooran Teerath Yatra’ from 1970. I have heard of this film earlier, but never did get an opportunity to listen to its songs. As I planned to bring this film on board in this series, I was checking out the songs of this film. And when I played this duet, I am verily bowled over by the sweetness of this composition.

In this series, the film being introduced today is of certain significance in the history of Hindi film music. The film is ‘Ziarat Gahe Hind’. Translating this phrase – it means – “हिन्दोस्तान के दर्शनीय इस्लामिक धार्मिक स्थल” – or important pilgrimage centers of Islamic religion in India. ‘Ziarat’ means to see, to visit – “दर्शन करना”; ‘gahe’ means a dargah (“दरगाह”), a place of religious pilgrimage; and ‘Hind’ refers to “हिन्दोस्तान”, India. In a manner of speaking this film is the Islamic equivalent of films like ‘Sampooran Teerht Yatra’ which presents the travelogue of centers of Hindu pilgrimages.

For today’s episode of this series, I present this sensuous song from the 1970 film ‘Veer Abhimanyu’.  As the name suggests, this is a mythological film, which based on the historical narrative from the epic Mahabharat. It covers the part of history of Abhimanyu, the son of Arjun. I give a brief summary below.

Abhimanyu is the son of Arjun and Subhadra. As Subhadra is the younger sister of Krishna and Balram, that makes Krishna and Balram uncles (mamma) of Abhimanyu. Being the son and nephew of the three best stalwarts of this epic, Abhimanyu is groomed to become one of the bravest and best warriors amongst the entire Kuru clan (i.e. both the Kaurav and Pandav lineages).

Yet another obscure and unfamiliar film from 1970.  The film is ‘Khooni Saaya’. Just as the name suggests, this is a stunt film – I am sure an effort to make a chilling crime thriller. What became of it, we have no idea.

What a wonderful gem of a song this one is. The memory banks hold this from the radio listening days. Such a beautiful semi-classical creation, and also very popular in its time – I am amazed it has waited so long in the wings to make its place here on our blog.
