Kitne din aankhen tarsengi

I never watched “Naya Zamaana”(1971), but I read the screenplay of this movie. Yes, those were the days when the screenplay of movies used to be published and they were eagerly lapped up by movie lovers. I read the screenplays of not only this movie, but also that of “Aasheerwaad” (1968), “Kati Panag”(1970), “Bobby” (1973) etc. These screenplays also had stills from the movie. These books described the story so vividly that one could visualise the movie in the eyes of the mind. Much later, when I watched “Bobby”(1973), I felt like I had watched this movie earlier while in reality I had only read its screenplay.

“Aalap” (1977) was a movie that turned out to be a commercial disaster. Now, with the benefit of hindsight, it is easy for me to say that movies should not be judged on the basis of their box office performance, but unfortunately that is the single most important yardstick to judge the success of a movie. After the failure of this movie, Amitabh Bachchan resolved not to work in an offbeat movie like this. After a few years, he worked in another such off beat movie called “Main Aazaad Hoon” with similar disastrous results at the box office.

Aap ki yaad aati rahi raat bhar

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
I thought that there should be at least one song of Jaidev from a film for which he got National Award for the best music direction, for discussion on the occasion of his death anniversary which is on January 6th. The ghazal is from film GAMAN (1978) – “Aapki yaad aati rahi raat bhar”. The ghazal was wriiten by Maqdoom Mohiuddin, the famous urdu poet and then a member of Communist Party of India. This has been sung by many ghazal singers but I like the way Chhaya Ganguli has sung this ghazal and also the tune and soft orchestra used by Jaidev to reflect the mood of the ghazal.

Here is one more of those “What ! This song was not yet covered ..” category of song. I was under the impression that this song had long been discussed but I was wrong. Now I realise that I had discussed this song in another of my (by now defunct) blog while discussing rail songs.

4th january is the day when R D Burman left for the heavenly abode at quite a young age of 54. He was easily the most influential music director of my formative age, viz 1970s. R D Burman as the music director, Kishor Kumar as the male playback singer and Rajesh Khanna as the male superstar arrived at the scene almost simultaneously and they all left their indelible mark of Hindi movie industry.
