Renowned Urdu poet Akhlaq Mohammad Khan, who wrote under the pen name ‘Shahryar’ and immortalized himself as the lyricist of ‘Umrao Jaan’, passed away in Aligarh on Monday (13th february 2012) after battling lung cancer. He was 75 and received the Jnanpith Award for 2008.

“Bemisaal” (1982) is a movie which was produced by Shri Lokenath Chitramandir. Debesh Ghosh was the producer and this movie was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. This movie was based on a novel by Ashutosh Mukherjee. This movie was a big budget movie starring the then superstar Amitabh Bachchan too. Gulzar, a name that will bring to mind poems and songs of unsullied beauty and edifying simplicity. A play on words that sound commonplace, and yet the meaning and the message they carry are so profound and endearing, that can make emotions swell in the heart. Be it the perky “Mora Gora Ang Layi Le” from film ‘Bandini’ (1963), or the poingnant “Koi Hota Jisko Apna Hum Apna Keh Letey Yaaro” from ‘Mere Apne’ (1971), or the spirited “Huzoor Is Qadar Bhi Na Itthlaa Ke Chaliye” from ‘Maasoom’ (1983), or even the belligerent “Chhod Aaye Hum Wo Galiyaan” from ‘Maachis’ (1996). Just saw the response from Peevesie’s Mom for the song Ital ke ghal mein teetal) from “Bahuraani” (1963) . And I remembered, the film Jyoti (1981) is almost a frame to frame remake of the film Bahurani (1963), with Jeetendra playing the role played by Guru Dutt, Hema Malini that of Mala Sinha, Vijendra Ghatge that of Feroze Khan, Shashikala that of Lalita Pawar, Ashok Kumar that of Nazir Hussain, and Deven Verma that of Mukri.

There are circumstances due to which films are abandoned midway during production. There are also cases where films have been completed, but once again due to some reasons, they do not get released. Many such films are lost to oblivion, and with them, also lost is the music that was created for them. The examples may be not many, but still it is not uncommon that such films and music from such films exists. For some such films, good fortune has prevailed and their music has become available over time, either officially released even though the film never saw the light of the silver screen, or unofficially put out into the gray market or on the internet.
