Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 42

Though I have been discussing Hindi movie songs in the blog for more than a decade now, it is not as if I had watched too many movies during my “formative” years. I recall having watched a few movies in early 1970s, with the last of these movies being “Zindagi Zindagi” (1972) in 1972.
My movie watching spree began in 1978 (after six years) when I joined college and got “freedom” that I as a college goer was “supposed” to enjoy. 🙂 And I fully misused my freedom, by watching movies when I should have been attending my classes.

In my last article, I had discussed Nagesh Kukunoor, a NRI and a Chemical Engineer from USA, who left his lucrative job there to become a film-maker. Somnath Sen was another NRI who, after working as a Software Engineer in the U.S., decided to become a film-maker. Armed with a Master’s in film-making from the University of Southern California, he returned to India to begin his passion for film making.

Today’s song is from film Shri Ganesh Mahima aka Shri Krishna Vivah-1950.
Mythological films have been my weakness from the beginning. When I was around 10-12 years of age, I would be a very happy, willing and enthusiastic escort to family elders-especially ladies, going for a Bhakti Pradhan film. What I liked in these films was the trick scenes and fantastic costumes. later on I realised these films also provided lot of religious knowledge in the formative years.

This is the story of a Telugu man born in Hyderabad in an upper middle-class Naidu family. He completes his schooling in a Boarding school in Yercaud. After graduating in Chemical Engineering from Osmania University, he proceeds to USA and completes M.S. in Chemical Engineering. He gets a good job in the USA as an Environment Consultant. So far so good. The boy has met successfully, the sequential schedules of most of the middle and upper middle-class families – Good schooling and college, higher studies in the USA followed by a good job there. The next in the sequence is finding a good bride for the boy to settle down and showcase him among the family and friends. But at this stage, there a break in the sequence of our Telugu man.

” studio system ” as it is called, began as soon as silent films got established and were on fast track. Well established studios made films regularly and systematically. Each and every studio/ production house had a set of its own actors, directors and MDs. They were on a monthly pay roll. From the 1920 onwards, all major studios like Imperial, Kohinoor, Sharda, krishna, Saraswati, Paramount, Aurora, Barua, Aryan,British Dominion, Great Eastern, Laxmi pictures, Madan Theatres, Maharashtra film company, Prabhat, Ranjit, Saroj etc had their actors on pay roll. Studios were jealous about their stars and always ensured that they don’t leave them.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 41

1st August of 2009, ten years ago. Five songs had been posted that day. As many as 4 movies opened their accounts on the blog that day – the four debut movies being ‘Shin Shinaki Boobla Boo’ (1952), ‘Sabse Bada Rupaiya’ (1955), ‘Duniya Rang Rangeeli’ (1957) and ’Laakhon Mein Ek’ (1971). The fifth film – ‘Bhabhi’ from 1957 had its 5th song posted that day.
The current status of these five films is that two of them – ‘Bhaabhi’ and ‘Duniya Rang Rangeeli’ have since been yippeee’d. for the remaining 3 films, two songs are pending for each one of them. The following table gives the complete status, as of just prior to this post today. The second last column gives info about the film status as of ten years ago, and the last column gives the status, as of today.

August 1st
Important for me, used to be my mom’s birthday. Thinking of her has only reinforced my feelings that the song with this post convey. She was one lively person who smiled through her illness and never let us know how much pain she was going through. She was always ready to accompany my dad on whatever tour he chose to organise. And I am sure they enjoyed every bit of their time and life together. That is the exact feeling that today’s song speaks of.
“Live life as if there are no tomorrows” – Kal Kya Hoga Kis Ko Pata, Abhi Zindagi Ka Le Lo Mazaa.
August 1st also happens to be the birth anniversaries of Meena Kumari and Bhagwan Dada. Meena Kumari, born Mahjabeen Bano, would have been 86 and Bhagwan Dada, born Bhagwan Abhaji Palav, would have been 103.
