Naao chali naani ki naao chali

As a child, I have been a very dedicated listener to the Hindi film songs on All India Radio and Radio Ceylon. Besides the song, another program that I never missed was the weekly program for children on Sundays, “Bacchon Ke Liye”, broadcast at 9 am. This hour long program was a most fascinating trip to many worlds. The program was hosted by the well known radio announcer Madhu Chanda (later also worked on Doordarshan), and a gentleman whose name I cannot recall now. The program consisted of information, entertainment, games (e.g. antaakshari competition, but not of filmi songs; it was on current Hindi poetry). We had stories, short plays, memoirs of great men and women from Indian history, programs on new adventures in science and exploration, programs on values and behavior. For all the years that I followed it on the radio, one thing that this program never was – it was never boring.

“Omar Khayyam” (1946) is a K L Saigal movie that I was not aware of. This movie had K L Saigal,Suraiyya,Leeta,Wasti,Shakir, Madan Puri, Suraiyya, Benjamin etc in it.

“Tansen” (1943) was based on the life of the legendary musician Tansen who lived in the era of Mughal emperor Akbar and who was regarded as one of the nine jewels in emperor Akbar’s court. The title role of Tansen was layed by K L Saigal and his love angle was played by Khursheed.

Here is a sstage song from the movie “Chaand” (1944). This song is picturised as a stage song on Sitara Devi. I am not sure who is the singer of this song. It could well be Sitara devi herself. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this fact.

I became aware of the movie “Zindagi” (1940) only just recently, but I was familiar with a couple of songs from this movie for some four decades. I had been listening to these songs at the srtoke of 8 AM on radio many a times in 1970s.

Main kyaa jaanoon kyaa jaadoo hai

During late 1960s and much of 1970s, when I was growing up as a kid, I scoffed at the songs that were played on radio Ceylon between 7-30 to 8 AM, which was the time for the programme called “Puraani filmon ke geet”. And the programme culminated at the stroke of 8 with a song by K L Saigal.
