Bhupen Hazaarika, the sound and the soul of culture of the east, is now silent, forever. A stalwart of many talents who would be honored by audiences and critics in many countries, a multi faceted personality who was single handedly responsible for breathing life into the endeavors of Assamese cinema, bringing international recognition to the age old music and culture of far eastern India.

I am not much aware about the movies and songs of 1990s and later. So when it comes to discussing the movies and songs from these movies, I am in unfamiliar territory. When I needs to discuss songs sung by Jagjit Singh (8 feb 1941-10 oct 2011), I need the help of those regulars who are failiar with such movies and their music in which Jagjit Singh figured. I am extremely thankful to Prakashchandra who promptly sent me the lyrics of a few songs (as well as details about these songs and their movies).

I know about many older movies, but frankly I had never heard of this movie called “Sitaaraa” (1980). I became aware of this movie and its songs only because of the lyrics of this song sent by Prakashchandra.

“Mausam” (1975) is a movie that is known as much for the acting of Sanjeev Kumar and Sharmila Tagore as for its music. Unfortunately Madan Mohan, the music director of the movie was not alive to see the success of this movie. For much of his life, movies embellished by his wonderful songs would bite the dust as the box office, and ironically, the movies released after his death, viz “Mausam” (1975) and “Laila Majnu” (1976) turned out to be hit movies riding on the music of these movies.

Vasant Desai had a fairly long stint of thirty plus years in the film industry, and yet his total assignments as a music director are less than fifty. It is said that he did not take up or did not get many assignments because of his style. His style is deeply rooted in the classical and folk traditions, and he maintained that style throughout his career. In the 60s and 70s, his assignments are few and far between, and yet, with each outing as a composer, he has left an indelible mark.
