Hullo Atuldom

Sometimes a sudden tune or memory or word sends the mind looking for a song or visual connection. So, a few days back it was a tune in my head that sent me looking for today’s song. I remembered, rather vaguely, that the song had Ashok Kumar dancing away merrily. I remember having seen it eons ago on Doordarshan – the one source of most of my nostalgia.

I hunted down the song. I found the name of the movie it was from. Searched for it on YouTube. Enjoyed my first encounter with that movie thoroughly. It has been listed on IMDB.com under “action, crime, drama” genre. It should also have been categorised as “comedy”.

Na Chaahoon Sona Chaandi” was the first time I took note of this roly-poly cute- faced actor. He played Braganza, a head-fisherman and father to ‘Bobby’ in 1973. Subsequently I saw him as mama to the character played by Hema Malini in ‘Aap Beeti’ in 1976, a pathan who helps Manoj Kumar in ‘Shor’ (1972), a sardar who was a good Samaritan in ‘Roti Kapda aur Makaan’ (1974).

Today’s song is from a bilingual ( Hindi/Gujarati) film Krishna Bhakta Bodana-44. I was not aware of who Bodana was. I was knowing about films Krishna Bhakta Sudama-80, as well as films Krishna-Sudama-1933, 1947, 1957, and 1979, but Bodana was an unfamiliar name to me. I came to know about this film first time in 2014, but I just ignored it.

In old days, we had days of specialists. Hero, Heroine would sing songs, play lovey dovey, etc.

Villain’s would made the life of hero and heroine miserable. They would have mujra and or cabarat dancers as part of villain’s set up.

Singing quawwali in disguise would be the response of the lead actors.

Then there was comic side plot. And then character artists, such as parents of the lead actors, siblings of the lead actors etc.

21st July, 1969 – a tiny me was waiting for the arrival of the school bus, around 6.40 am in the morning, at the end of the lane where we lived, in Karol Bagh area of Delhi. Three, maybe four other friends, going to the same school – executing the normal morning routine, with strap bags on shoulders, waiting to espy the school bus that we all recognized oh so well, to take a turn from a crossing about 200 metres away – to come, and to gobble us up, and to carry us to yet another day at the school. I think, it was too early in life to philosophize about the love-hate relationship with education, school and school teachers. It was still kind of an eager fun to travel in the bus and get to a classroom, and spend time watching teachers do their things on the blackboard, for us. Ah yes, the blackboards back then were actually black, and white chalks were then the standard instrument of communication between the teacher and us.

Throughout the year, this blog notes anniversaries of various artistes. We celebrate their birth anniversaries, we remember, and observe with respect, their death anniversaries.

We occasionally also celebrate birthdays of Atulites here.

But there is one date that we all celebrate every year with a lot of love.

And that is this blog’s own birthday.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 30
——————————————————————————————

May 1st 2019. International Labour Day. Also happens to be the date when the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat came into being from the erstwhile Bombay state in the year 1960. This happened as a consequence of the States Re-organisation Act of 1956 which defined boundaries for the states within India on the basis of languages. The Bombay State, that was formed by this act, was composed of different areas where Marathi, Gujarati, Kutchi and Konkani were spoken. There was a movement since 1956, which demanded that the state of Bombay be re-organised further on the basis of areas where Gujarati and Kutchi was a major language and other where Marathi and Konkani was majorly spoken. So, The Bombay Reorganization Act was enacted in the Indian Parliament on 25th April 1960 and the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra were born on 1st May 1960. That makes Gujarat and Maharashtra 59 years old today.

The Many Colors of Love #30 – The Covenants of Love
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

And so wrote the scribe

kar le dil ka sauda dil se
dil milta hai mushkil se
(‘Yahudi Ki Ladki’, 1957)

The transactions of heart are bound, but by just one covenant – it is the treasures of heart in exchange only for treasures of heart. No other exchange is possible, no other exchange is expected, nothing else in this whole wide world can be traded for the treasures of heart. For those who may want to, or expect to transact this exchange for something else, then they do not understand the true meaning of love.

And this thought brings up this song today. The burden of this song reiterates this maxim –

deta hai dil de
badle mein dil ke
ghe ghe ghe ghe
ghe re saaiba
pyaar mein sauda nahin

For the longest of time, I was under the impression that this song is already posted. And the reason for that is, that the song “Jhooth Bole Kauwwa Kaate” has been around on the blog for almost two years now. Being familiar with the film, one clearly remembers that these two songs are tandem songs, presented on screen one after the other – rather one flows into the next. Yes, true that Geet Kosh lists these two songs separately, but somehow in my mind, I have carried this impression that these two are a single song.
