Hullo Atuldom
The song with this post was suitable for 19th August. 19th was the remembrance day of Khayyam the music composer who began his journey in Bollywood in 1947, when he sang a song with Zohrabai Ambalewali. His first as a music director was in 1948 as ‘Sharmaji’ of the ‘Sharmaji-Varmaji’ composer Duo. The statistics page of the blog says that Khayyam saab has given music to 377 songs in 42 movies. That may seem too little when compared with music directors who were active during that period; but each song of his were ‘pure pleasure on the ears’. Songs like ‘shaam-e-gham ki kasam’ (1953) or ‘tum apna ranj-o-gham’ (1964) are still popular as also the hits from the ’70s and ’80s: ‘aa jaa re, aa jaa re o mere dilbar aa jaa’, ‘kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayal aata hai’, ‘dikhayi diye yun ke bekhud kiya’, and many more that I grew up listening to, of course at that age only the songs used to play in my head, I never knew details about singer, composer, lyricist etc.

How do I begin this post? I am at a loss. I have so many things running in my head. Should I say Sunday 25th March 2018, was a bad day or sad day. But it was definitely a day which began sadly for me. I normally begin my Sundays an hour later than working days, but this Sunday was different. The constant buzzing of my mobile due to incoming messages disturbed me. And one of the message was from my son, who was travelling, and had not slept in the bus. He was seeing the internet site of a news channel which carried the shocking news that the darling of the audiences SRIDEVI had passed away in Dubai of a CARDIAC Arrest. That jolted me and my first reaction was to google for confirmation. And sure enough the news had broken on the internet a few minutes back. The first person to break the news to Atulites was Satyajitji from DOWN Under. And the reactions followed through the day- here there everywhere.

Today is the 76th birthday of Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma of the Shiv-Hari duo. So on this occasion I was going through the list of movies for which the duo have given music and came across this song from Yash Chopra’s Chaandni (1989). And I thought bingo! Apt song for saluting the genius of Shiv- Hari and for the celebrations in our family that begins from tomorrow.

Remembering Mahendra Kapoor today, 9th January, his birth anniversary.
A resounding voice, that brings home the feeling of echoes in the valleys and mountains. A booming voice that is the representative and the choice for the rousing songs of chivalry and patriotism. A voice that is unmatched in the annals of the industry. A voice that has probably the widest vocal range amongst the contemporary singers and is rich in the higher octaves. Likened with the famed Italian tenor, Pavarotti, Mahendra Kapoor was always called upon to render the songs that needed power and exuberance. Listening to his voice gives a strong feeling of mountains and wide open spaces full of sound and melody. His songs are remembered for their inspiring and dominant strength.

Another rare gem. This song from Doosra Aadmi is sung by comedian Deven Verma on himself, and the female voice is Pamela Chopra’s who was the wife of Yash Chopra, the maker of this movie.
The lyrics has a word like Sanwariya mentioned prominently. And guess what, Ranbir Kapoor whose debut movie was called “Sanwariya” was not born then, but one can clearly see Ranbir Kapoor connection in this song. His mother and father play the married couple in this song, as they did in many movies together at that time.
