Songs of religious fervor are an integral part of hindi films. This was more prevalent upto 80’s, than I think the trend went downhill. In recent decades this type of songs have made a return in the mainstream film with spectacular bhajans and philosophical/religious flavor.
In Mohammed Rafi Sahab total output of around 5000 songs, I can guess this genre of bhajan/religious/philosophical/naats/qawwali’s accounts for 7-8 % . This is my conservative guess work, this might well turn out to be 10%.

As story telling songs go, my personal favourite song is
this song from “Jab Jab Phool Khile”. Another such song which is readily coming to mind is this
this post written by me.
There are more such wonderful songs in this genre in Hindi films. While looking for a Mohammed Rafi song for the 15KSMC, I found this song, which is sort of storytelling and kids entertainment song. It’s a pure Solo song from the 50’s written by Rajendra Krishan and composed by C. Ramchandra for the film Insaaniyat(1955).

“Raajput”(1982) was produced by Musheer Riaz and directed by Vijay Anand for M R Productions, Bombay. This “social” movie had Dharmendra,Hema Malini,Rajesh Khanna, Vinod Khanna, Ranjeeta Kaur, Tina Munim,Rehman, Ranjeet, Nazir Hussain, Om Shivpuri, Indrani Mukherjee, Iftekhar, Purnima, Murad, Mohan Sherry, Prem Sagar, Tej Sapru, Brahma Bhardwaj, Harbans Darshan M Arora etc in it.

Blog Ten Year Challenge (2009-2019)–Song number 24

Nowadays, we generally believe that the golden era of HFM lasted from 1949 till 1980 and after that the general standards of HFM fell down several notches, never to recover again.
When I was growing up in 1970s, I felt that this deterioration of HFM had started in 1970s itself. Some of the songs that later were considered classics were regarded by mediocre by me during those days. For instance, the songs of “Do Chor”(1972) were mediocre for me. Song like Yaari ho gayi yaar se lak tunoo tunoo was jarring to my ears. “Sanyaasi” (1974) songs were downright mediocre as far as I was concerned.

Blog ten year challenge (2009-2019)- Song number 20

Today (21 march 2019) is the festival of Holi. Indian festivals are based on Indian festivals and so they fall on different days in different years vis a vis Gregorian Calender). For instance, ten years ago in 2009, Holi festival had taken place on 11 march.
It is not possible to have Ten year challenge for Holi festival songs, because first, the festival falls on different days in different years of Gregorian calender (as discussed above). Secondly, one movie normally has only one Holi song. I have yet to come across a movie that has two separate Holi songs.

Today’s song is from film Arab ka Sitara-1946. Produced and directed by Nanubhai Vakil, under his own banner- Roshan Pictures, it was a costume drama film,eulogising the greatness of Islam and how sincere 5-time Namaz pleases Allah- the Supreme power.The 10 songs of the film were written by Shevan Rizvi and were composed by the One Film Music Director S Qureshi.
