It’s been exactly five weeks since my last post here – but somehow it feels much longer. I’m reminded of that famous dialogue from Aandhi (1975) – “waise to ammavas pandrah din ki hoti hai, lekin is baar bahut lambi thi.” 🙂 These five weeks felt like five months.
One possible reason for this is that this happens to be my 200th post on this blog. So I’ve been on 199 for 5 weeks. Even Mudassar Nazar would be proud of my achievement. 🙂 Since this is IPL season, it’s also safe to say that franchisees wouldn’t exactly be falling over each other, outbidding each other to try to buy me at an IPL auction. 🙂

The movie had Raj Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha, Mithu Mukherji (new discovery), Sanyen Kappu, Sulochana, Asit Sen, Jagdish Raj, Maruti, Prakash, Shekhar Purohit, Rajan Haksar, Duggal, Saminder Pande, Chandulal, Rajrani, Amar Sen, Sameer, Baby Lubna etc, with special appearances by Subhash Ghai, Jagdeep, Sundar, Leela Mishra and Yogita Bali.

“Asli Naqli” that was released in 1986 was directed by Sudarshan Nag. It had a star cast of Shatrughan Sinha- Anita Raaj- Raadhika- Rajnikanth- Amrish Puri- Shakti Kapoor -Ashok Kumar. It had a normal storyline wherein as boy is separated from his wealthy parents in childhood. His parents have only one clue of him- a locket that he is wearing. Upon his father’s death the mother embarks on a mission to trace out her long-lost son with the help of (typically named) Durjan Singh (Amrish Puri). Durjan Singh and his son Shakti Singh (Shakti Kapoor) plant Birju ustaad (Rajnikanth) as the son with the sole motive of plundering the wealthy widow. Then Shatrughan Sinha steps-in and the plot spices up. Further the ladies are there for the song and dance routines. Essentially what this movie had was two superstars with stylised acting and the public had a paisa-vasool feeling. It had a decent run at the box-office.

Subhash Ghai first directed “Kallicharan”(1976). People like me thought that his title was inspired from a leading West Indian batsman of those days namely alvin Kalicharan. Our doubt was confirmed when he named his next movie as “Vishwanath”(1978). 🙂 Vishwanath was a leading Indian batsman of those days. Gavaskar and Vishwanath used to be the two most reliable Indian batsmen of those days. Gavaskar would score runs on placid tracks whereas Vishwanath would score runs on pitches assisting bowlers. India never lost a test match when Vishwanath scored a test century. Vishwanath married Gavaskar’s sister and that way the two of them are jeeja and saala.

It had Raj Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha, Moushmi Chatterjee, Farida Jalal, Ranjeet, Nirupa Roy, Paintal, Gopal Sehgal, R.Tiwari, Usha Kiran, Peace Kanwal, Jagdish Raj, Nazir Hussain, Gufi, Paro Devi, Maruti, Uma Khosla, Raj Rani, Master Bhagwan, Gurucharan, Usha(Gwalior), Pandit Ganga Prasad(Gwalior), Mansaram, Master Rajesh, Master Rahul, Master Sonu, Master Rajiv, Baby Shaloo, and Manu Arora. Today 15th October 2016 is the 94th birth anniversary of Shankar Singh Raghuvanshi. We know him as Shankar of the music director team Shankar- Jaikishan of the 50s and 60s. Shankar Singh s/o Ram Singh (15 October 1922 – 26 April 1987) was a native of Telangana (formerly Andhra Pradesh and at the time of Shankar’s birth probably Nizam territory) and spent his early years in Hyderabad. During his formative years, Shankar played the tabla and learned the art formally from Baba Nasir Khan Sahib. For many years, Shankar studied as a disciple of the legendary composer Khwaja Khurshid Anwar, in whose orchestra he performed. Shankar started his career with a theater group, before shifting to Prithvi Theatre where he played tabla and performed some minor roles in plays. Shankar worked as assistant to the leading composer duo of Husnlal Bhagatram.
