There have been songs and songs on the lives of courtesans or Tawaifs as they are called. And there have been many songs where a “tawaif” with a golden heart will fall in love with a sweet boy next door kind of hero. And it will take the hero the whole of the movie to realize that he also loves the “tawaif”. The only difference will be the route the movie will take to help the hero reach his enlightenment about his love for the lady in question.

In the 70s Brij Sadanah directed a string of movies after his “Victoria No. 203” became a hit. Almost all his subsequent movies had Pran and Ashok Kumar in central roles with the hero himself being of secondary importance. All his movies had a whole lot of people running after gold or diamonds or khazaana. Then there would be at least one song in disguise.

BAHU BETI (1952) seems to be an obscure film which was produced under the banner of Kesar Films and directed by C L Dheer. The main cast included Geeta Bali and Amarnath in the lead roles with Vijaylaxmi, Jaswant, Leela Mishra, Rashid Khan etc in the supporting roles. There are 8 songs in the film written by Kaifi Azmi (7) and Vishwamitra Adil (1) which were set to music by S D Batish. Incidentally, the film’s director C L Dheer was the father of TV and film actor Pankaj Dheer (‘Karna’ of Mahabharat) and the grandfather of film actor Nikitin Dheer who has acted in films like ‘Jodha Akbar’ (2008) and ‘Chennai Express’ (2013).

Khaamosh! Now that is what most mimicry artists would like us to remember this star by. But actually he is more loved for his stylized acting which was not or never a copy of any of the then reigning superstars…. Dilip Kumar- Raj Kapoor- Dev Anand or for that matter Shammi Kapoor. He had a great voice, didn’t have the classic good fair looks of the Pathan descendant actors of those times. Yet he always managed to keep his fan following in the face of stiff competition of Amitabh, Dharamendra, Rajesh Khanna Vinod Khanna etc. And he didn’t mind doing blink and you miss roles at the start of his career. Remember the inspector or havaldaar (don’t remember which he was) assisting Raj Mehra in Saajan (1969- Manoj Kumar Asha Parekh starrer)? He was also seen in a bit role in Pyar Hi Pyar (1969 Dharamendra starrer) (Wikipedia says that he was there in that movie, I have not seen it).
