Missing Films of 1960s – 93

With this song, we introduce the film ‘Nai Zindagi’ from 1969. As I check the Geet Kosh listings, I find two more films with the same name – one from 1943 and the second from 1951. The 1943 film has Sheikh Mukhtar and Anees Khaatoon as the lead pair. In the 1951 movie, the lead pair is Nirupa Roy and Amarnath. The one in 1969 has Dev Kumar and Kumkum as the lead stars.

Mohammed Rafi : The Incomparable (II) – Song No. 07
—————————————————
I remember during the radio days, whenever a non filmy song programme would start, we would shut down the radio. Now it was time to play or to do some study seriously or even watch TV. The time for all of these things was limited. Entertainment was available only on its time with fixed hours and no more, because even if we were free the friends will be called home and play time was over. Time spend with friends in the colony playing or just doing gup-shup was precious.

Blog ten year challenge (2009-2019)- Song number 3
———————————————
When I began Blog ten year challenge (2009-2019) on 2 february 2019, the challenge ran for two days before hitting a roadblock that lasted two days. The reason was, allthe movies that were covered on 4 and 5 february 2009 were already YIPPEED so none of their songs were left to be covered on the same date ten year later. Same fate befell all movies (bar one) that were covered on 6 february 2009 as well.
The only movie whose song was covered on 6 february 2009 and which still has a few songs left to be discussed ten years later is “Sitaaron Se Aage”(1958). This movie was produced by V L Narasu and directed by Satyen Bose for Narasu Studio, Madras. This “social” movie had Ashok Kumar, Vyjyanti Mala, Johny Walker, Jagdeesh Sethi, Raja Sulochana, Shammi, Manmohan Krishna, Ifthikar, Kundan, Sampson, Krishnkant, Leela Mishra, Rama Sukul, Rajendra, Tony Walker, Sagar, Ravikant, Prem Dhawan, Moolchand Kapoor, Radheshyam, Bishan Khanna, Vasantrao Pahalwan, Sailen Bose, B M Dixit, Patanjali etc in it.

Missing Films of 1960s – 87

Goodness, I am surprised this film is still to appear here. It is titled ‘Patni’ from 1970. The name may be unfamiliar, but when I checked out the list of songs – you know, I had that déjà vu feeling – accha, so these songs are from this film. Geet Kosh lists 5 songs for this film, and I dare say, at least four songs are very, very familiar – resounding memories from the radio listening days. Listening to them again was not the surprise; the name of the film really was.

Today, October 1st is the birth anniversary of two iconic personalities of Hindi film music. Both started their career in Hindi film industry in Bombay (Mumbai) in 1946 – one as a music director and the other as a lyricist. Yes, it is Sachin Dev Burman’s 112th birth anniversary and Majrooh Sultanpuri’s 99th birth anniversary. Both have been my favourites amongst the music directors and lyricists of the golden era of Hindi film music. Both seem to have been made for each other. SD Burman was one of the earliest pioneers in introducing the concept of ‘tune first lyrics later’ in Hindi film music while Majrooh Sultanpuri was master in writing lyrics to the tune.

My affair with Tanuja (one of the many that I had during my school years) started when I first saw her in a film on Doordarshan. If I remember correctly, it was ‘Bahaaren Phir Bhi Aayengi’ from 1966. The song was “Aapke Haseen Rukh . . .”. The way this song is filmed, Tanuja looks such a pretty enchanting young lady, as the camera pans in on her with sunlight behind, the rays of the sun diffracting from her open tresses. At that time, I did not even know her name. Just that face, and the vision of sunlight reflecting from her hair, and I lost my heart to her.

Hullo Atuldom
“Darmiyaan” (1997) was a movie set in the Bombay (before being rechristened Mumbai) of 1946. It starred Kiron Kher, Tabu, (established actors of that time) with Rita Ganguly (renowned Hindustani vocalist), Rupal Patel, Hilla Sethna, Sayaji Shinde, Shahbaz Khan playing supporting roles. Arif Zakaria made his debut in this movie in the difficult character of a eunuch.
