Today’s song is from a forgotten movie of the late 1970s “Bagula Bhagat” (1979). It was directed by Harmesh Malhotra and produced by Gullu Sippy. It had a cast of Ashok Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha, Shabana Azmi, Kamini Kaushal, Padma Khanna, Mehmood Jr. etc. I think I saw a short video of the movie online somewhere and think I spied Anwar Hussain and Goga Kapoor as his henchman. It had music by Kalyanji Anandji and songs written by Anjaan. Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor, Amit Kumar and Asha Bhonsle as playback singers. The movie was written by Subhash Ghai and Bhalla.

Today’s song is from an obscure film of 1942 – ‘Nari’. It was made by Venus Pictures, Bombay and was directed by Raja Yadnik. I have no information about this director, except that he had directed 13 films – from ‘Magic Horse’ (1935) to ‘Anarbala’ (1961), averaging 1 film every 2 years ! From his list I find that none of his films were popular or a hit film. The music for the film ‘Nari’ was given by H.C. aka Harishchandra Bali.

The years 1980s and 90s were the golden period of TV serials which used to be telecast on National Doordarshan Channel. The TV Serials of these period might have been lacking in technical specs as compared with that of the current TV serials. But what made these Doordarshan serials very popular was that they were mostly based on down to earth story lines, the good directions, the good performances of the lead and supporting actors and above all the absence of the present TRP dominated TV industry. These factors have made the TV serials of yore unforgettable for most of the the viewers including me. And the proof is that most of these serials had repeat telecasts on a number of times keeping in view the response from the viewers.

Today 19th of August 2022 is the third Remembrance anniversary of the legendary music director Mohammed Zahur “Khayyam” Hashmi Saab, whom we fondly know as Khayyam Saab.
He was born on 18th February 1927 in a village Rahon in the District of Jalandhar – Punjab.
From Jalandhar he came to Delhi and from Delhi to Lahore to Mumbai again back to Lahore and finally to Mumbai to start his career in Hindi Films in 1948. He started his musical career as a Singer first, singing a duet in the movie ‘Romeo and Juliet’ (1947) with Zohrabai Ambalewali. And later got his first assignment to compose music for the movie ‘Heer Ranjha’ (1948).
