Pancham’s Music – Eighties-to-Nineties (1981-1994…) Duets-12
Today’s duet composition by Rahul Dev Burman is from the 1996 movie ‘Ghatak’ or ‘Ghaatak’. This movie was directed by Rajkumar Santoshi who also produced this movie for his home productions ‘Santoshi Productions, Bombay’. It was passed by the Censor Board on 01.11.1996.
In the last post under this series we had a song from the 1993 movie ‘Aaja Meri Jaan’. No movies with R D Burman’s music were released during 1994 and 1995. Though the movie ‘1942 A Love Story’ is mentioned as a movie of 1994, it was actually certified by the Censor Board on 31.12.1993. So it is obvious that it was released in the theatres in 1994. (However as per non-documented but strictly adhered 🙂 to SOP of this blog, we now need to correct the year of ‘1942-A Love Story’ as 1993 on this blog 🙂 ).
The cast of ‘Ghatak-1996’ included Sunny Deo, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Danny Dengzongpa, Tinu Anand, K.K. Raina, Anjan Shrivastava, Amrish Puri, Om Puri, Mamta Kulkarni, Mukesh Rishi, Ila Arun, Viju Khote, Harish Patel, Brij Gopal and others. Music for this movie was composed by R.D Burman and Anu Malik. Since R.D Burman passed away during the making of the film, Anu Malik was roped in to record the remaining one song for this movie. This movie has five songs and total six sound tracks including a ‘theme music’ track composed by R.D Burman. Majrooh Sultanpuri wrote the songs for this movie. Playback singers for this movie are Suresh Wadkar, Sadhna Sargam, Alka Yagnik, Shankar Mahadevan, Anu Malik, Kavita Krishnamurthy, and Asha Bhonsle.

Before coming to the song, I would like to talk about the film itself. I remember going to see it at Chandragupt Talkies, one of the then popular single screen cinemas of Indore with my brother and enjoying this movie. That cinema is long gone like many other single screens but I still remember the josh of going to that huge cinema hall. Indore which came in the MP circle used to have this unique thing that the cinemas would get displayed on Thursdays (most other circles actually screened the movie the next day on the Friday). There would be huge queues to do advance bookings in those cinemas. Sometimes, we would have to request passing by girls and ladies to stand in the ladies queue to get tickets fast!

Mohd Rafi – A Journey Divine – 1
(1944-46)
किसी ने कभी पानी से पूछा — पानी रे पानी तेरा रंग कैसा
तो जवाब जो पानी ने दिया — जिसमें मिला दो लगे उस जैसा
Someone once asked water, “Water, water, what color is yours?” The answer water gave was, “My color will resemble whatever I am mixed with.” This isn’t a quality, a skill, an art, or anything significant. It’s the very nature of water, a gift from God, bestowed upon water. When God created water in the universe, He granted it an inexhaustible treasure: despite being colorless, it possesses the unique ability to manifest every other color. Perhaps with a similar thought in mind, God brought to this earth an individual whose voice was so gifted with the ability to become the voice of any and every personality, every character. He shaped that individual’s personality with such natural simplicity that it could provide a voice for everyone behind the scenes, yet its own existence remained completely inconspicuous. This individual’s voice might be in the background, but listeners might not even be aware of its presence. Over time, this voice would linger behind hundreds of characters. Only those who knew would know what it was.
