Today (11 october 2015) is the 73rd birth anniversary of Amitabh Bachchan (11 october 1942). From his date of birth, it can be seen that he was born a few months after the Quit India movement. Inspired by that movement, he was initially named “Inquibaab”. He was later renamed Amitabh on the suggestion of Hindi poet Sumitranandan Pant who was a close friend of Amitabh’s father, poet Hariwanshrai Bachchan.

This is a song from film Jaalsaaz-59. This film was made at a time when Kishore Kumar as a Comedian Hero was in his Top form and people used to go to theatres only to watch his antics and listen to the songs sung by him. Little importance was given by moviegoers to the, plot or histrionics in a Kishore Kumar film. There were other artists and movies to take care of good acting and good storylines, whereas Kishore Kumar movies offered something different, namely good laughs and entertainment, paisa-vasool style !

Wishing Usha Khanna on her 74th birth anniversary, a celebration full of all things good and happy.
For some reason, Usha Khanna never received the recognition and fame that she so rightfully deserves. She is not the first, but definitely is the most successful and talented of a handful of female composers in the Hindi film industry. Born on 7th October 1941, she composed music for her first film at a very young age of 17 with ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ 1959. This was also after more than one year of a sort of apprenticeship and convincing the world that composing was an easy task for her.

Today (6 october 2015) is the 69th birth anniversary of Vinod Khanna (DOB 6 october 1946). The dashing actor of 1970s was the only real competitor of Amitabh Bachchan for the top slot in 1970s. Just when it looked like Vinod Khanna was going to launch a serios bid for the top slot, he got disillusioned with life and turned spiritual, only to get disillusioned with his spiritualism again and he came back to acting again. It was too late for him by that time of course.

Let me explain the title and the intent of this new series. This series is an outcome of the project that our dear Katie Ben from ‘saat samundar paar se’ has undertaken, after she got hold of the Geet Kosh volumes. She zeroed in on volume 4, and she set about identifying all the films of the 1960s, that have yet to find a representation on the blog. Specifically, the period covered is 1961 to 1970. So she has very zealously pored through the fourth volume, page by page, film by film, and simultaneously kept on checking with the data on the blog.
