8th December is the 75th birthday of Rinku or Begum Ayesha Sultana Khan who also is known by the name Sharmila Tagore. What was not known is that she was born in Hyderabad. (I didn’t know, the stalwarts of the blog may be aware). She looked so delicate and fragile in “Kashmir Ki Kali” (1964) – her Hindi debut, having debuted in Bengali in 1959 through Satyajit Ray’s “Apur Sansar”; the need to protect her from Pran must have come naturally to Shammi Kapoor. She has a super-sweet smile too with deeeep dimples that form whenever she smiles. It was not as if she excelled only in glamourous baby-doll type of roles; she was comfortable even when she played the roles of mother and daughter – Chanda/ Kajri- in Gulzar’s “Mausam” (1975). 1975 saw her in five movies “Mausam”, “Chupke Chupke”, “Faraar”, “Amanush”, “Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka” and the character she played in each of them were completely different from each other.

“Tum Haseen Main Jawaan” produced and directed by Bhappie Soni, released in 1970. The movie had six songs of which three were written by Hasrat Jaipuri, two by Indivar and one by Rajinder Krishan with Shankar Jaikishan as music directors. The cast was headed by Hema Malini and Dharmendra with Helen, Anjali Kadam, Helen, Sulochana Latkar, Rajendranath, Dhumal, Anwar Hussain, Mohan Choti, Iftikhar and PRAN. The story screenplay etc was the handiwork of Sachin Bhowmick. I have seen this movie a long time ago on Television and this is the basic storyline-

Today’s song is from film Mera Imaan-1934.

I have been writing on old films and songs since 2012. Most of my posts are for films of the 30s and the 40s. However, I have also done innumerable posts on songs and films of period 1951 upto as latest as 2018. That is because, I believe, good music and good films exist in all eras. Only their percentage differs. Additionally, one’s likings generally decide what is ‘Good music’, based on his taste. Taste develops depending on one’s exposure. If I don’t listen to a song of 2019, how am I to conclude if it is good or bad ? Without analysing these factors, people are in a hurry to brand films and songs as good or bad.

(#Music Composer-Singer-Bappi Lahiri#1)

Welcome all, to this post which is another of those posts of mine that was planned way back (in February 2019, to be precise)when I presented a song from the 1977 movie ‘Paapi’.

Music for this movie ‘Paapi-1977’ was composed by Bappi Lahiri. Though I had not watched this movie ‘Paapi-1977’, I liked the song that I then presented. Today’s song, also by Bappi Lahiri, came up in the list of suggestions that appeared in ‘YouTube’ with that song.

Hindi Songs in Bangla Films – 10
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

‘Saheb Bibi Golam’ (1956, Bangla film) was based on a story by the same title, written by Bangla novelist, Bimal Mitra. The film was directed by Kartik Chattopadhyay. The main star cast of the film was Uttam Kumar, Sumitra Devi, Anubha Gupta, Chhabi Biswas, Chhaya Devi, Nitin Mukherjee and Padma Devi. The story of the film relates to the time when the aristocracy of feudal lords was on the decline under the British rule by the end of 19th Century. The story revolves around the platonic relationship between the feudal lord’s neglected wife (Sumitra Devi) and a clerk (Uttam Kumar). The film was not only critically acclaimed, it was also a box office success.

Today’s song is from film Utho Jago-1947, a completely obscure film.

1947 was a very important year, not only for India, but also for the Indian Film Industry. Creation of Pakistan , on the basis of Religion, and Partition of India prompted an unprecedented exchange of people across the borders. Millions of people left their life earnings and ran to the other side of the border to save their lives. In this melee, millions died and millions lost their properties. More than any other industry, film line was affected more because it had the maximum mixture of Muslims with Hindus and films were made at Bombay as well as Lahore. These two centres now belonged to different countries and the film industries at both places were in turmoil.

Welcome all to this post where once again I take you all back to the songs of seventies.

I originally wanted to present this post during the ‘Diwali festival’ since this song brings back my memories of ‘Diwali vacation’ days of my childhood. L liked this song as well as the other songs from this movie.

The song is from the ‘1975 movie ‘Warrant’. I was around seven years old then when the movie was released in 1975.

As I have said in one of my recent posts, whenever I read something inspiring, be it a poem or an article, it inspires me to write something of my own thoughts. Nowadays there is less and less readable material forthcoming from the print media. The blog and its posts are sometimes savior’s for the intellect. One such article was the post by Sudhir Sir – “Gandhi Tere Desh Mein Ye Kaisa Atyachaar“, on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.  It appeared quite late in the night, but as I read it completely, it was a thoroughly readable and thought provoking post. At least I found it thought provoking and for the next few days the matters and the quotes from the Mahatma’s books, and my own thought relating to them were reverberating in my mind. I wrote a lengthy comment on the post which I am reproducing here.

Welcome all to this post which comes after a long gap. I call it a ‘Long gap’ because this post was conceived by me ‘long back’ like many other posts of mine which remained unfinished aften getting started due to various reasons.

My last post on the blog was on 20th November. It was posted when I going through some health-related issues. I had to visit a Hospital in Nairobi, which is around 125 kms from my base station. Since some tests were to be conducted, I had to stay in Nairobi for four days. I stayed with colleagues working there in the Head Office. That didn’t allow me to concentrate on posts though I continued listening to music and watching songs. I even kept reminding our authors about movies that were falling under the ‘blog-ten-year challenge’.
