Hindi Songs in Bangla Films – 6
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

A couple of months’ back, I had come across a Hindi song ‘ruke ruke se kadam’ from a Bangla film, ‘Laal Pathore’ (1964) sung by Mubarak Begum under the music direction of Salil Chowdhury. I could not locate the picturised version of the song. The tune of the song gives me an impression that it is picturised as a mujra song. While it was a new song for me, the ‘mukhda’ of the song sounded familiar to me. Oh! Yes. It was the more famous song, ruke ruke se kadam from ‘Mausam’ (1975) sung by Lata Mangeshkar under the music direction of Madan Mohan. Both the songs have almost the same lyrics which are accredited to Gulzar. So, it is one song, composed in two tunes by two different music directors, depicting two different emotions.

Today’s song is from film Izzat-1952.

The title “Izzat” obviously carried lot of “Izzat” with producers, because I find this Title in 1937, 1952, 1968 and 1992. Further there was Izzat Aabroo-90 and Izzat Aabroo-2005 (I thought these words were synonyms), Izzat ka Rakhwala-2010, Izzat ke Lutere-90, Izzat ki Roti-93, and Izzatdaar-90. I am waiting for a title Izzat ka Falooda. In these days of strange Titles, this is not impossible.

After three years na aaj thha na kal thha was posted on the occasion of Kishore Kumar’s Birthdate. After almost a full year Sudhirji gave us this article on a song which can be called as a “movie inside a movie” song.

What is the common between the Hindi film song, “Jaa Tose Naahin Boloon Kanhaiyya from ‘Parivaar’ (1956) and a devotional song in Sanskrit,  “Vatapi Ganapatim Bhaje”?  The answer is that they are based on Carnatic Raag Hamsadhwani (also written as Hansadhwani).

Today 5th November is the eighth remembrance anniversary of Bhupen Hazarika (8 September 1926 – 5 November 2011). I am not adding any adjectives before his name because they will not do justice to describe the ‘personality’ he was, the monumental work he has done, the legacy he has left behind, and finally the ‘human for humanity’ he was.

Hullo Atuldom

Let us all wish the Baadshah of Bollywood on his 54th birthday.

Wish this was an audio post, then I would have started my post with what we used to hear on the radio Ads in the 70s and 80s. I would have first played a line “aashiq hoon main qaatil bhi hoon” then after the voice over by a Vijay Behl or Ameen Sayani or a Vinod Sharma or it could be Harish Bhimani (I don’t remember the names of all the announcers, sorry) the Radio Ad would have closed with the repeat of the last line of the mukhda of the song – “Baadshah o baadshah, baadshah hey baadshah, baadshah”.
