This is the story of a ‘self-proprietorship firm’ uniquely named ‘Atul Song A Day’ (hereinafter called the Company) which was set up on July 19, 2008 by Atul Besra. In his venture, he received encouragement from Raja, his Cricforum friend. The mission was to produce at least one song a day. However, due to abundant supply of ‘raw material’ and the demand for the ‘finished product’, the production was increased to more than one song a day within 3 months of its existence.

It had one lovely song after another.

Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 2

There has been a long gap after the first post appeared in this series. My original thought was that I would be able to share posts in this series at the rate of one post per month. However I could not do sent any other post after the first one, which was sent on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the ‘First Superstar of Indian Cinema’.

It is well past 3.00 in the night (early hours of the 18th of July) as I start to write this post for the blog. I’m tired, my eyes are almost closing, I know I should be going to sleep – but the mind is rebelling and urging me on. It is saying “Go on, you can do it, you need to do it. You need to write a post, however tired you are, however badly the post comes out. You cannot let him down. Not on his death anniversary.”

Today’s song is from the film Do Roti-57. It is sung by Shanker Dasgupta and Suman kalyanpur ( I think she was still Suman Hemady then), under the baton of composer Roshan.

In our effort to bring on the films of 1960s as yet missing from the blog, today with enter the year 1963. This is as per the list of pending films sent by Khyati Ben. ‘Been Ka Jaadu’ is alphabetically the first film of 1963 that is still waiting representation here. To recap the status, I am giving below the list of films from 1961 and 1962, for which we are as yet unable to trace any songs.

Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 21

‘ढ’
“ढोलक को खूब बजाओ, जानी को खूब नचाओ”

Today’s alphabet letter has been the most elusive to locate. Statistically, ‘ढ’ is one of the lesser used letters, and so, the songs starting with words starting with this alphabet are comparatively fewer in number. As I was poring through the song lists from various sources, the search always ended with just three songs starting with ‘ढ’. And incidentally, these three are well known songs, and are already posted on our blog. The search through the lists, whether from Geet Kosh or other sources, is sometimes a problem, because at times a leading couplet appears in the beginning, and ‘mukhda’ of the song appears in the later part of the title. Searching for such words in the title is a difficult and tedious task. But after some extra effort I was able to identify this song. Then I went back into the Geet Kosh again, and confirmed that the ‘mukhda’ of this song indeed starts with the word ‘ढोलक’.

‘ड’
“डूबी नैय्या आके किनारे”

Continuing with the alpha series of songs by Rafi Sb, I present today a lesser heard sad song from the early years of his career. The year is 1948.  The young singer is just finding a foothold in the industry. The film song that will become his first popular hit happened this year – “Ik Dil Ke Tukde Hazaar Huye. . .” (from the film ‘Pyaar Ki Jeet’). Other very significant songs are also to follow in this year and the next (1949).
