Today’s song is from a 90 year old film – Manmohan-1936.
The film was made by Sagar movietone and it was the 3rd Directorial film for Mehboob Khan. The music was by Ashok Ghosh, a very well known name in Bangla filmdom- who had a very enthusiastic and talented assistant- Anil Biswas. The cast of the film consisted of Miss Bibbo, Surendra (his 2nd film), Yaqub, Ashalata (real name Mehrunnisa, who later married Anil Biswas), Ram Marathe, Zia Sarhadi, Bhudo Advani and many others. Lyricist, dialogue writer and story writer was Zia Sarhadi who also did a small role in this film.
You will be surprised if I tell you that this film would not have been made if K L Saigal was not acting in films of New Theatres in Calcutta ! Strange, but true ! Let us see how….

Today’s song is from an 82 year old film Shukriya-1944. It was a Comedy Social film, made by Talwar productions. Bombay- owned by Producer and Director R.C.Talwar. R.C.Talwar aka Raghubir Chand Talwar was born on 21-4-1910,at Tollygunge,in Western Punjab-now in Pakistan. His film life, as many others of his ilk, started in Calcutta and ended in Bombay. While at Calcutta, he worked as an assistant to Kidar Sharma. After the success of the film, Aulad / Dil Hi Toh Hai (1939) , the film’s heroine Ramola got romantically involved with R.C. Talwar, Kidar Sharma’s assistant who later became a director in his own right. According to Kidar Sharma, “R.C. Talwar was a classmate and friend so I ignored his relationship with Ramola.”
He was a screenplay writer, producer and Director.Starting from Manchali-43,produced by Talwar productions,Calcutta,which he had established there,Talwar directed films like Albeli, Khiladi, Sangdil, Ilzam, Rukhsana, Memsahib, Ek dil sau afsane and Naya Kanoon-1965.He produced 2 films,Sangdil and Memsahib-for which he had written the screenplay also.

The film was produced by Kerawala and Bhojani for the banner of Sarosh Pictures, Bombay. It was directed by Ramji Bhai Arya, for whom this was his last film as a Director. He had spilled over from the Silent films. He started as an assistant to several directors before starting as an independent director of Talkie films. He directed films like Hindi ke laal-40, Manthan-41, Jungle ki pukar-46, Bhedi Dushman-46 and Sher e dushman-47. There were 2 Music Directors – Aziz Hindi and Ibrahim. Both names had an aura of mystery around them.

Film Parichay-54 was produced by Radheshyam Jhunjhunwala under the banner of J.J.Films, Bombay and it was directed by Satyen Bose, whose famous film “Jagriti “- 54 was also censored in the same month. Film “Parichay” was released in Opera House,Bombay on 17-12-54, whereas Filmistan released their film Jagriti in “Naaz”, Bombay on 11-2-55. The cast of film Parichay was Shashikala, Abhi Bhattacharya, Pranoti Ghosh ( later married to Abhi Bhattacharya), Sajjan, Zebunnisa,Panchotiya, Shakuntala, Indira Chitnis, Dhumal etc etc.

Today’s song is a trio from an obscure film Oonchi Haveli-1955.
Though the HFGK mentions this film as a social film, from the photos of this film which I have seen, this film looks more of an action packed Costume drama of B grade. I am calling it a B grade film, because the cast of this film has featured well known artists of that time. It had Nirupa Roy (as a Stunt Girl)), Karan Dewan, Lalita Pawar, Bhagwan, Janaki Das,Yashodhara Katju, B.M.Vyas, Indira Bansal, Heera Sawant and many others, including a Guest artist-N5iranjan Sharma. Music Director was Pt. Shivram Krishna.

It was directed by Kala Maharshi Baburao Painter and its music was composed by Govind Rao Tembe. All the 10 songs of the film were written by Pt. Anand Kumar. The cast of the film was Durga Khote, Master Shyam, Nanasaheb Phatak, Raja Paranjape, Heerabai Badodekar, Keshav Rao Datey and others.
